spoilt lab lives here
Applicant dispels resident concernsBRIONY SNEDDEN 05 Mar, 2010 08:33 AM The developer of a proposed animal incineration plant at Telarah revealed it will be a pet cremation service. A Keg Greenhills spokesman, representing the applicant, told the Mercury he believed there was a need for a low-cost service of this type. He also dispelled residents’concerns about the operation. The Mercury reported on Thursday that Maitland City Council had been inundated with telephone calls and submissions about the plans for Green Street, and residents had launched a community campaign to voice their opposition. They said they were concerned about possible emissions from the development. But the spokesman said the European-manufactured incinerator emitted no smoke or odour and met emission control standards in Australia, the US, Great Britain and Europe. He agreed with the residents’ assertion it would be better located in a rural area, but advice from the council said it was a permissible development in an industrial zoning. “We don’t think the residents should be concerned and they are protesting over a preconceived idea of what’s involved without any technical knowledge of the process,” the spokesman said. “Many machines like this are in operation at hospitals and in urban areas for many years, presumably without protest by the ever-present concerned residents.” The development application lodged with the council said road kill, domestic pets and small farm animals weighing up to 135kg would be cremated at the facility. It would operate between 10am and 4pm, with the ashes to be returned to the animals’ owners or disposed of in land fill. Plans for the development are on public exhibition until March 15. sandgrubber
I learned about a new version of NIMBY. It's COVE. Stands for Committee Against Virtually Everything. Sounds like a good issue for them to take on.

GeckoTree
Really though I can understand the preconcieved notion, I mean who would want to smell the stink of burning animals all day long. Thats probably just what they thought. Edited March 5, 2010 by GeckoTree
spoilt lab lives here
Personally dont see the big problem with it. The area they want to put it in is an industrial area anyway.
Maxiewolf
No one would even know it was there unless someone told them. If they used words with mer decorum such as "Crematorium" (sp?) No one would care or say a thing but when you use big "oh ah" nasty words like "Incinerator" people freak. Its a nessisary service, we dont see these same services for people stuck out in the middle of nowhere. More often than not they are right in the middle of a town. no one says anything about any 'smoke' or 'smell' because there isnt any.
Jed
Councils really are a minefield. Someone wanted to put a pet crematorium in a rural area, in my shire, same deal as this one. Council wouldn't give permission. Wouldn't tell him where it should be either. Next shire has one in a rural residential development. No one except those who need it, know about it. smooch
I can understand peoples concerns about this, the industrial area is very very close to residential areas.

spoilt lab lives here
It was rejected and will not be going ahead. So the residents got their way.
Bartok
We incinerate humans and nobody complains The animals need to be disposed of and if it is build correctly etc then no problem here either. Either that or they go to landfill and think that is worse
