Any Advice Re A Whippet With A Sprained Hip?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Our 8 year old whippet was diagnosed this morning with a sprained hip. The vet gave her Carprofen (plus daily tablets until our next appointment next Friday) and a shot of Zydax (which needs to be given weekly for one month).

We've separated her from the boys for now (as none of them has any sense of personal space and tend to use Pen as a pillow) and will be giving her Fish oil now in her dinner as well as sardines / pilchards (probably overkill :o ) to try and help her joints. Penny weighs 13 kgs, so is not overweight, but has previously strained her shoulder, so I'm now a bit concerned her joints are aging faster than the rest of her.

Is there anything else I could be doing to help her get back on her feet?

I would still definitely take her to a greyhound muscle man. If you dont know of any, ring a greyhound trainer or go to the track and ask around. They often find things that vets just cannot. I wouldn't just trust the vets diagnosis in this case.

Hey Stormy.......how's all your skinny dogs?......often wonder how your iggys going - I have one of my very own these days (he's such a clown)...........joint problems are a problem - we've been told to mix grated vegys in with chicken mince to help movement for joints - high protein isn't the way to go I've been told although I've forgotten the ratio of veg to meat - we give half n half plus the fish oil and have just bought a new product that has helped heaps with arthritis pain in one of our older dogs by Nutra Life called MSM Glucosamine Chondroitin Joint Food as advised by another DOL member. I bought it over the internet so just google for the best price.....Hope Pen improves real soon!!!!!!!

Sorry there Polomum you have been given the wrong information.

Veges are full of selulose and dogs cant digest celulose. The only way to use veges with dogs is to put them through an electric juicer or pulverise them to liquid in a blender. Other than that you are just waisting your time and the carrots.

Hey Stormy perhaps have a look at the barf diet - this is the website with reference to vegetables - lots of others too if you want to google............http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml

Apart from rest and teh muscle man, the only other things I can really recommend are Tuffrock poultice and swimming. One of my boys knackered his shoulder, not once but 3 times (what a thoroughbred!) and after 2 days of poulticing he could walk with even weight and the swimming just helps strengthen without pressure.

Kirislin - Thanks, I would never have thought of a Greyhound vet... I will ring around and see where I can find.

Polomum - The skinny dogs are otherwise all well. Dante, the little feral, will be three in May...can't believe it's gone that fast. I'll have a look at the Nutra Life - MSM Glucosamine Chondroitin Joint Food, plus Joint Guard & Sasha's Blend was also recommended to me (another DOLer - gotta love DOL) We used to feed Barf Patties but became a bit too cost prohibitive for 4 dogs so now use Eagle Pack - though I can put just Pen on it if it helps. Will look at the websites you've mentioned too.

oakway - do you know if vegetable juice from the supermarket (Like V8) would work? - as I don't have a juicer.

SoL - I haven't heard of poulticing  (so am off to Google...). Swimming would be great though not sure where I could take her where she can do it (she's afraid of the water / waves at the beach and has never ventured into the creek for a swim). Mmmm I wonder if there's such a thing as a dog physio that has a heated pool...

Pen hasn't really moved off her bed today, though she did eat her dinner - she just seems "flat" :D

 all for your advice - it's greatly appreciated

Stormy, I dont mean a vet, I mean a "muscle man" more like a chiropractor, but find one who specialises in greyhounds, that part is important. The best way is to ask greyhound trainers who they use.

I would second the Greyhound Person and swiming if you can - in a heated pool of course!

Hope she recovers quickly for you

Oh and I had Bowen done on Lewis and was amazed at the improvement after only one treatment and a couple of days. By the end of his treatments - brilliant!

D'Oh! And I thought I was doing so well to have tracked down a "greyhound" vet at Quakers Hill :dancingelephant: Kirislin thanks again for the heads up.....

dogmad - Do you know if the place at Leichhardt specialise in Grey's?

Rommi n Lewis - I'll also look into Bowen (I have a friend who does it on people so she may know someone who does it on dogs - I have never heard her mention that she does)

SBT123 - Will have a read about the Ester C too.

Thanks again for the advice

Stormy........I'm going to give this powder a try after reading the site SBT123 mentioned.......http://www.arthritis-cats-dogs.com/arthritis/arthritis-pain-relief.php ...........has more in it than my Nutra Life product (although the dog I'm using this for has improved almost 100% with Nutra Life - he use to howl and cry almost every morning when he moved from his bed - and now it's getting colder in the mornings and not a peep from him) - I was amazed with the change in him!!!!!! Happy googling !!!!!!!!!

Kirislin - Yep Vic is a bit out of my range :) (I struggle with the greater part of Sydney as it is...). Apparently the vet I was going to see is also a qualified doggy Chiro so all is good (had a recommedation for the same fellow from a greyhound trainer this morning) :D

Polomum - Let me know how you go ;)

this sounds good! I wouldn't be surprised if he finds something the other vets couldn't. I will ask around today for you as well, I know alot of greyhound people in Vic but some might know of chiros in NSW. Often the really good ones travel the country treating dogs, sometimes the big trainers fly them down.

My 14 1/2 year old whippy is suffering with her shoulders, she is on Joint Guard, and having Cartrophen monthly, and I am about to start her swimming in a heated pool at one of the Vets here in Adelaide.

After reading about Ester-C I am wondering if that could help her too, I googled and there are quite a few brands out there, can anyone recommend one?

The one SBT suggested is overseas, I would like to start it asap, so don't want to wait for that to arrive.

TIA, Trish
