PoppyDog
So this afternoon when I get home I gave Poppy (our 12 week old CKCS X) cuddles and was giving her a brush when she rolled over for a belly rub. On closer inspection of her girly bits I noticed that there seemed to be a little pustule just on the inner bit of her vulva and it also looked as though there was some crusty blood on her vulva. Of course I paniced and rang the vet but they can't see her till tomorrow! So what could it be? She is still weeing fine.

ellz
Could be something as simple as a spot of misplaced puppy acne (they do tend to get it on their bellies) or it could be a bite or something more sinister.
PoppyDog
I wonder if it is a bit of puppy acne? She did have a spot on her belly a week ago...its gone now though... Hmmm...
SwaY
Im going ot go with puppy acne, i have a 4month old Dane pup who gets a few spot on his belly and penis. They will be here today, gone tomorrow. The dry blood would be cause for concern.
PoppyDog
Thanks Sway! I think I will get her vet checked just incase! For my piece of mind! Lol! I'm not even sure if its dry blood. She just has darkness in the creases of her vulva that looks a bit crusty. I don't know though...Ive never had a girl dog or even known one so to be honest her whole girly bits are very strange to me! OH kept asking what it was when we first got her home! He thought something was wrong with her! Haha!
SwaY
I'm not even sure if its dry blood. She just has darkness in the creases of her vulva that looks a bit crusty. Sounds like protein stained hair, It's orangey/red on the skin and hair. Caused by licking and licking some more

And its always been a bit red in the creases of her vulva...I can never get a close enough look as she doesn't like me poking around down there and I don't blame her! Lol! Do you think I should still take her to the vet???
SwaY
Do you think I should still take her to the vet??? If it was me i would not take her, but that's me. Take her if it will put yourself at ease or she is not right herself or you think she needs vet care. I take photo's of things each day to see if it get's better or worse. I think you should take a picture, you can look back and see if it's better or worse over the next few days,
persephone
I think sway is right By all means take her to your vet if your are unsure, tho. as she doesn't like me poking around down there your dog 'should' allow you to handle any part of their body.It is a necessary and basic grooming/health procedure, after all Practise every day- when she is relaxed... rub/pat her everywhere! ears, open mouth, rub gums, lift tail, rub inner thighs/belly/touch around vulva.... handle feet nd look between toes... everywhere! iggy mum
I wonder if the 'crusty' bits in the crease around her vulva is dried urine. It can look a very dark colour when dried in the crease of her little twatty. My iggy gets that from time to time and I just either gently pick it off or, if that's too hard, then bathe the area in cold tea (or the like) to get it off. I then apply ilium cream twice a day till better. Hope this is all it may be and nothing more serious.

She has a small feathering of white hair coming off her vulva which is wet after she wee's so I'm guessing girl dogs can't just shake it off like boy dogs can. I bathed it in warm water yesterday and it looked a bit better but I think for my piece of mind I will still take her to the vet this arvo. Even if its just to get some information on doggy girly bits as they are very foreign to me!

TBH money is tight for us atm and I don't want to go in if its not needed. OH said he had a good look at her bits today and they looked fine... iggy mum
Yeah tell me about it lol. I hope the problem is only what I mentioned earlier and nothing more. So, just keep your eye on it and if it gets to the point where the crusty bits look sort of like a scab and if the skin underneath and around the 'scab' becomes red, keep bathing it with a tepid soothing solution and cotton wool until the scab is removed and then get some "Ilium Neocort" cream to put on it if you can, its an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic skin cream and it works wonders. Heals in a couple of days. ETA: I have to do this fairly regularly as my Zoey has deep creases around her vulva and, like your pup, hairs that retain a bit of urine after weeing. She's used to it now and just lays there quietly until its done. She's such a good girl. Edited March 5, 2010 by iggy mum

We got it last time we went to the vet as Poppy hads been dragging her bum so it was a bit red. She didn't have worms and the vet checked her anal glands which were all fine so she thinks she is doing it after a poo or if its itchy which is apparently normal. Should I put the cream on now? Or just watch it?
iggy mum
Well, if the area is inflamed, it could't hurt, it just may give her a bit of relief, up to you. I generally have to cuddle Zoey for about 5-10 minutes after applying the cream to give it time to work before she licks it off lol. She just love the stuff, don't know why, but if I don't put the plastic tube out of reach, as soon as my back is turned she grabs it and tries to get the cream out, my tube is currently repaired with gladwrap to prevent it drying out These are just my thoughts as your problem sounds very much like mine, but other more knowledgeable people here may have better opinions on what it may be and the remedy. I am certainly NO expert in 'all (or any) things doggy.
