Obedience Club Vaccination Requirements

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking at joining obedience club with my boy once puppy pre-school finishes, he is 17 weeks old and now fully vaccinated with 2 x C4 shots and 1 x C3.

The particular club I am looking at has a new requirement that all dogs must be vaccinated with a C5 shot. Is this sort of restriction common with obedience clubs? I am going to call them later in the week during their office hours, but what do you think are the chances of me taking my pup to this club? I'd be happy to booster in 12 months time with a C5.

Thanks everyone!

I guess we have no real control over club rules, however vacination requirements have changed according to our vets. After 12mnths no more until 3yrs.

after five not necessary at all, there are two exceptions to this BC's and Rotties have to be done yearly, I have no idea why, I assume the C5 has kennel

cough I have never had kennel cough vaccinations given to my dogs, and they have never had it. Beagie

You can get the Kennel Cough vaccine separately (to make it up to the C5) - have a chat with your vet

ETA: I agree with the change in vaccination protocol - 3 yearly C3 has been recommended by the AVA - we just have to educate the vets and all the dog establishments. Kennel cough is still recommended every year for dogs going into high risk environments.

My border collie was given a 3 yr vaccine C7 at 14 m/o. The vet didn't say anything different about borders & I haven't read anything about a difference between bc's & rotties.

Don't know about Rotties, but AFAIK, there's nothing special about requirements for Border Collies. My vet is happy to look at titre testing my Border Collies, and not necessarily vaccinating annually. Would probably still get KC done, as they're around a lot of dogs (and yes, I know it'e no complete guarantee  )

I am not an expert on the subject just repeating what one vet said to me, maybe they are a little more prone to things

I realy don't know, I do however think that c7 is a lot to take all at once however as I said I am not a vet or an expert in the matter Beagie

In my experience, most dog clubs ask for a C5. If you've had a C4, just have the fifth component separately. You can then have a parainfluenza/bordetella booster each year in between 3 yearly C5 boosters.

Haven't heard anything about Border Collies needing done yearly, many years ago there was some talk about Rottweilers not responding to vaccinations as well as other breeds. It was thought perhaps to be because their maternal antibodies declined at a slower rate than other breeds, which affected their response to their puppy vaccinations. I've also heard that the vaccines that are used now are more able to overcome maternal antibodies so it's not as significant an issue. My vet vaccinates Rottweilers the same as any other breeds.

We give Rotty pups an extra killed parvo vaccination as babies - pretty much for the reason that Working Dog Lover stated, which has the potential to make them more prone to Parvo as youngsters. So, we do a normal vaccination routine and then add in a killed parvo vacc at 6 months.

As adults, we don't vaccinate them any differently to any other breed of dog and our dogs are only vaccinated every 3 years.
