KismetKat
From what the OP wrote I didn't get the impression this kid was intellectually disabled but of course that would make a difference. I've worked with Austism Spectrum Disorder children. The DSM-IV criteria (for Autism, not Rett's, Asperger's, CDD or PDD NOS) outlines areas the children have problems with. Eye contact, obsessive interests, and an inability to read social cues are just a few of them. Many Austistic (again, not Asperger's, Rett's, CDD or PDD NOS) kids also have a permanant "blankness" to their face. OzPit - I've spent a lot of time with kids. My own, my many neices and nephews, even great neices and nephews - plus help with my kids classmates with reading and been the 'mum on the bus' for school swimming... Seems every 2nd kid these days either has an autism spectrum disorder or a nut allergy. But I have never seen a kid like this before. This was not a 'blankness' - the look in this kid's eyes was pure hate.
slk
Seems every 2nd kid these days either has an autism spectrum disorder or a nut allergy. and.......this is relevant how - just another putdown for the evil kids of todays society. Heaven forbid your child ever have a life threatening condition. I have a 7 year old with a severe peanut allergy (and kiwifruit, jeez, she's super abnormal). She eats peanut or kiwifruit - without medical intervention - she dies. Simple. Yeah, these evil kids who are a bit different than your normal kids. What a pain in the arse they are. I can't believe the hate in the tone of some of these responses - seriously, they make you worse that the "evil kid" because you're all adults who should know better! becky thatcher
Have read this thread from start to finish and in my opinion the kid was doing role play in his costume. I know the types well I think he needed to be gently told that it is not safe to stare down a dog though.

I'm soory for your daghters illness, my daughter who is now an adult, suffered from asthma & severe excema, she was allergic to a lot of foods, most were the ones kids love, like chocolate & cheese, but she never stared down an animal, she loved them all, OH she was allergic to animal hair as well, but it never stopped her going & giving an animal a cuddle. I think that maybe the autism rise could be caused by the fact, that hormones are used to generate faster growth in chickens, plus genetically engineered food, this has to have an affect on kids. slk
Who know why our kids are suffering more today than they did even in my childhood. Personally, our specialists can't give us any answers. There's lots of theories, and one that I tend to agree with more than others is that our food today is so full of additives and so overly processed. Who knows - but they are very real conditions, affect peoples lives, take peoples lives and I can't believe the tone that's been used towards them in this post. Edited to add - my daughter has a list of allergies as long as my arm (only 2 are life threatening) but the ONE and ONLY allergy she has grown out of in the past 5 years is her allergies to dog dander !!!!! How happy is she as she is my true animal girl Edited March 2, 2010 by slk
Snoopy21
More kids are diagnosed with autism these days because people are more aware of the signs, and diagnostics tests etc are better. During my childhood those children would simply have been "weird" kids or "disturbed" or my favourite "touched". The rate of diagnosis of ASD is 1 in 150, nowhere near 50% - I don't know the stats about peanut allergy. I think he needed to be gently told that it is not safe to stare down a dog though. Very true!

And if it was me with my super friendly Lappie I would have taken her over to him to say "hello" and given a little talk about dogs. However if it had been me with my nervous reactive Wolf x I would have run a mile.

Totally OT I have an analyphalactic child to nuts too I don't get the entire link with staring at dogs, there are many reasons why allergies and autism is more prevelant nothings been proven though and trust me they are real! Also chickens don't get given hormones, that just doesn't happen anymore, the particular chicken that is used for meat is bred to grow quickly and it's fed A LOT! I don't think hormones have been used for about 30 years. I guess I find it sad that there is such hated directed at kids because mine just love animals so much they would never set out to cause harm, it's sad to tarnish all with the same brush IMO.
