Evil Child Spooked My Dog

Went for a walk today with our lovely rescue collie and stopped to watch an auction in a nearby street. I settled the dog in a sit next to me but there was a young boy (maybe 7 or 8) sitting in the gutter nearby. He was dressed in some sort of gladiator costume.

The boy turned around and saw me and my dog, and then proceeded to glare at my dog. Honestly, this was the weirdest behaviour from such a young boy as he just glared, and glared, and glared at my dog. It was like he was trying to give the dog the evil eye. And he persisted for so long...

I could tell this was making my dog a bit uncomfortable but I was so crowded in by people it was difficult to move away without making a fuss ("excuse me") in the middle of an auction. My dog remained calm but DID turn away from the kid so at least he wasn't seeing the continued glaring and then resettled into a sit. Meanwhile I am still keeping an eye on this kid and the little bugger is STILL glaring at the dog (even tho his back is turned). It was a total hard fixed glare/stare!

The auction finished and I walked away, but this kid's family was behind me. I heard the kid say, in a very loud voice (and he could only mean my dog as there were no others about) "that is a dangerous dog". I did not hear the parents say anything to rebuke the kid.

wtf?

And all I can think of is at some stage this kid will glare/stare at a more reactive dog, the dog will react, and it will all be the dog's fault (at least in the eyes of the law).

I probably would have told the little shit to stop staring at the dog like that... but I have poor social skills with people... *grin*

T.

I think mine are worse than yours (social skills that is) - i felt like drop kicking him into next week.

Let me add this was not the look of a child scared, the look was full of hate!

How bizarre! I wonder if his gladiator costume had anything to do with it. My son used to have a batman suit when he was little and his whole demeanor changed whenever he had it on. It was really weird but funny too (he was still too nice to give dogs evil stares though, lol). Maybe this child was in "evil gladiator mode" and your dog was the lion! Who knows?

Sorry, I hate kids. Especially ones with no manners :mad

Kei is terrified of little kids and if they stare at him before I can re-direct his attention he will let out an almighty bark. Normally this scares the evil little buggers off, but of course the parents tend to glare at me if this happens so we try and avoid it.

If it had of been me I probably would have said something very LOUDLY to this child along the lines of "it's rude to stare" Of course what I'd like to say is "Upset my dog one more time and I will let him eat you" But unfortunately that might get me into a spot of trouble so I have to restrain myself

You should feel sorry for the poor kid. No doubt he got his prejudices from somewhere (i.e. his parents), so don't be surprised that they didn't apologise either.

I hate reading posts about kids on here. Some people are so hostile and tar all kids with the same brush. What happened to "blame the deed, not the age group"?

Me too  I have 3 boys, they are gentle and loving towards all animals, they have been taught well. I think rather than hate something that makes you uncomfortable why not invite them to pat your dog? Then they will becone animal loving adults rather than fear dogs, most hate comes from fear.

While I understand some kids are downright scary, we were all kids once, and it's not nice to be hated. My dogs are regularly taken to kinders and school to become socialised to children, I hope they remain ok with them as they grow. Mind you I am very watchful that the kids are gently and behave correctly around them.

What sort of gladiator would he be if he was scared of a wolf, anyone heard of role play

I would have moved the dog and stared the little monster down myself.

Spooky kid.

And before anyone gets on the you must hate children ban wagon, I would do exactly the same thing to an adult who was acting the same way.

Hmm, maybe I should add that i dont hate ALL kids (and yes, I actually have one :D ) But seriously, with the number of downright rude, misbehaved, obnoxious kids out there I find it hard NOT to cringe when I see one. Each to their own, we can't all be all goo goo, la la over kids

Adults are a completely different story  . Sooo MUCH easier to yell at and put in their place without getting yourself a dirty look from their mummy

From what the OP wrote I didn't get the impression this kid was intellectually disabled but of course that would make a difference.

But otherwise, I have children in my life and some of them are absolutely fantastic people. But there are others who are not. Like the kid who raised his fist to my dog and went to thump him when we were outside a shop and the kid I found throwing things at my dogs over my garden fence. Both of them got an earful from me and were left in no doubt as to what would happen if I EVER saw them do it again. I like kids but I'm not "starry eyed" about them. I treat them like small, uneducated adults. I believe in equality when it comes to things like that

I don't care how old they are or what their tragic history/story is. Child or adult - creepy is creepy, nasty is nasty and I won't put up with it around people or animals I care about.
