Puppy Breeders

That website is horrible. SO MANY PUPPIES! And EVERY bitch in the photos looks SOOOOO sad. Disgusting.

I'm no expert on labs, but they don't really look well bred either (I am no doubt wrong about this tho )

OP: 5 of the oodles I groom at my new job are rescues. There are many out there, don't let your poor friend buy into the bullsh*t these websites spew forth. These dogs are not rare, or designer, or anything. Look at a pound. Because for every puppy that these types of places sell, a pound puppy loses a potential home.

One other point that deserves a mention to your friend.....grooming!!!!!!

A Spaniel/Poodle cross (I detest the stupid made-up name of Spoodle) can have a shedding coat. It can also be an extremely difficult coat to groom...as can any Poodle cross.

She will need to book it in to a grooming parlour often....and it WILL cost. Are they prepared for this ongoing cost?

Friends purchased a Spaniel/Poodle cross (before I had a chance to talk them out of it) and a friend of their's teaches grooming. She takes their dog to her teaching sessions to show just how difficult he can be to groom. This dog is a nice dog (we mind him when they go away)......but he certainly did not inherit the Poodle brains, he is a total dimwit, likeable but 'dumb as ducks**t' as my OH describes him.

If they are first time owners with kids...I would recommend a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from a legitimate registered breeder.

This family has never owned a dog before and talking to this woman she admitted she is frightened of working breed dogs.

Ummmm, what does she think poodles and spaniels are? They are BOTH gundogs, working dogs, not lapdogs. Tell her to at least do some research before she adds to the dumped dog rate.

I tried to post something helpful but it just makes me sick. These people should be locked up (River Gum i'm referring to). It's heart breaking that dogs are dumped to die because of well meaning people wanting the "cutest fad" puppy. And please let her know that if she shows up to a dog club and uses the term "Spoodle" someone (like me) will just laugh at her. Seriously - it's a joke. These dogs are cute, lovely mutts from illbred miserable bitches and studs. To purchase a dog from them is to support the exploitation of innocent animals. Support a registered ETHICAL breeder or save a life and rescue - money in these peoples hands is as good as a nod of approval for the exploitation of dogs.

Wow that site is a real eye opener! My mind just boggles at the weird combos of dog they are crossing to get the 'perfect' unpredictable, and to be honest , sometimes ugly, combo in one dog. Next thing they will be trying to cross a lab with a cat so you get a dog that doesn't bark!

Thank you for your input. Everything all of you have written I totally agree with. I am very familar with rescue, especially rescue organisations in Sydney.

We own two dogs which we got as mature dogs. The first one a shelti/Kelpie cross from Hawkesbury pound, only had thirty minutes left when we pulled her off death row. She just celebrated her seventh birthday last week having been our best friend for six years. The second is a red cattle/jackrussel/corgi. Yep all those breeds in one dog. We rescued him from AWL two years ago and he will celebrate his 4th birthday this year. Wonder if he could be a new designer dog, except he is desexed. We think he is cute but don't know what spin of a name a breeder would call him, maybe corjaca. Maybe with that sort of breed we could get treble the price for him!!!!!!

So, personally I will always own a rescue, just wish my circumstances were different so I could have more.

Today I E Mailed my mutual friend to stop this woman from going to this puppy farm. Will let you know the response as soon as I get one. But surely 28 negative responses, must have some sway.

Her eventual purchase will be a puppy, just hope whatever breed she changes to it comes from a reputable breeder.

Let's hope her common sense, ethics and humanity will prevail.

It is not about the cute puppy from the pf (although many will suffer from genetic disease/health issues down the track) it is about the poor bitch who is usually confined her whole horrific life to produce for the pet shop market. :)

My brother and his wife have two oodles from this particular establishment. The dogs seem healthy enough although one clearly lacked socialisation with humans when very young. The biggest thing ive noticed about his dogs is how incredibly stupid they are, seriously. They eat ANYTHING and do mean anything. This has results in 2 emergency surguries, once after the dog ate a magnetic pool game, second time after one of them ate a skewer off the barbie - wooden skewer and all. They are brainless and not terribly attractive dogs although as puppies they were cute and fluffy. They dont have much personality and tend to yap.

I could not live with dogs as brainless as these two are! Poodles in particular are intelligent dogs, they have clearly bred the brains out of their dogs.

Unless she wants an unattractive, stupid dog with unknown health/behavioural problems, I would steer clear of buying an oodle from this puppy farm!

Before you run down crossbreeds, I suggest you be aware that many people on this forum have crossbreeds and that stupidity and eating whatever they feel like trying isn't limited to crossbreeds. There are also many attractive crossbreeds. I have no doubt Rivergum are puppyfarmers but running down crossbreeds wins you no points.

Im not running down crossbreeds? I have a crossbreed myself. What I am saying is that the oodles from this place are extremely dumb dogs. Granted I have only met two, but they were both from different litters several yrs apart I tend to think they are typical of what these ppl produce.

Perhaps you should not be so quick to assume..

I just had a look at the site, unbelievable. How on earth can they possibly look after that many puppies properly, well they can't can they.

The legs on the Cav x Lab pups look weird too, I don't like their chances of being sound adults at all.

Some of the bitches, esp the Lab and GR's look like they are on the aged side of life too, its very sad.

I am interested in hearing the outcome of this from the OP.

OP, can this potential puppy buyer explain why they think a "Spoodle" is the best "breed" for their situation? If we know the answer to that, perhaps we can make some other breed suggestions for her?

As of now, have had no response, just silence. Will follow up if I have not heard anything by tomorrow. Will ask why they want a spoodle because it may be the key to finding the correct breed of pup for them. Thanks for the tip T Time.

No, the two you've met have been dumb. You cannot extrapolate from two dogs that every dog from this place is dumb. They might well be but two is hardly a good sample.

As to assuming, you're hardly in a position to get snippy at someone else.
