LukasandMel
Hi we are the very proud owners of a beautiful little German Shorthaired Pointer who turns 11 weeks old in Tuesday.... We are having a real problem with him having an upset tummy. Have taken him to the vet and have been on chicken and rice for the last 4 days with no change. Have previously found out from the breeder that 2 pups have died due to a reaction to the Protech C3 (Fort Dodge) vaccine (all male, dark liver colours).....Ahh now the stress levels are high, we are now trying the 24hour fast of no food, still water available, any suggestions???? GRLC
How worrying for you. I suggest taking him back to the vet for a checkup it certainly can't hurt . hope he will be ok .
dancinbcs
What medication has the vet given him? At the very least he sounds like he should be on Scourban. I don't like the idea of wait and see with a puppy that young. I think reaction that bad to a C3 would be pretty unusual. Adverse reactions, to varying degrees, to C5 are reasonably common but not to C3. I would be worried that the puppies actually had faulty immune systems for that to happen. In my breed, Border Collies, we discovered a fatal genetic immune system problem that sometimes showed the first symptoms after vaccination. The problem was not the vaccine but the puppies inability to cope with it. These sorts of faulty immune systems are common across many species, so they probably also occur in other dog breeds. The fact that they are common was the reason we were able to have a DNA test developed very quickly. They are hard to pinpoint clinically because the symptoms vary depending on the challenge to the immune system. A puppy that contracts an infection will have different syptoms to one that reacts to a vaccine, but they can still have the same underlying problem. Hi LukasandMel. I'm sorry as I have no advice other than to suggest another visit to the vet tomorrow. Puppies can go down very quickly. Have you changed the food in his diet suddenly at all? This can sometimes cause problems. Is there both diarrhoea and vomiting, or just one of these?. I remember the early days when I brought Heidi home, she has some fairly runny poo for a couple of weeks. We were continuing with the same diet as the breeder, but I think it can be a common reaction to leaving one home, and going to the next. I hope you have no problems with the vaccines. My breeder told me the same thing, as she had some pups die from a vaccine once. Hopefully, it is nothing that serious. We have a GSP thread on here. Come and join us soon. GSP Thread. teekay
I hope your pup is better today. It is a worry when they are so young. We also had a similar problem with Jenna when we first got her. She had runny poos for at least a week and we were feeding her the same food as she was used to. I think it was the stress of leaving littermates, and she came to us on a flight which would not have helped matters. Eventually the vet gave us some pink medicine. Nasty smelling stuff - smells like muscle rub but did the trick. Sorry I can't remember what it was called. I'm not really much help am I?
toughgirl27
I certainly agree that he should be on some sort of medication for the diarrhoea, being that young. Scourban or Peptosil. Hope he is doing better today. My thoughts are with you. It's terrible when your pooch is suffering. Also it's not really good to fast a puppy that long either.
