Feeding Giant Breed's

That's what I thought, that surely it couldn't be that expensive, $100 per week seemed like a lot. That was told to me by someone that owns Newfoundlannds. I couldn't fathom how breeder's afforded that much per dog per week.

Does their intake get less as they get older or does it remain fairly steady. Do they eat everything that is down, like labradors? Just my boy will only eat as much as he wants/needs and is happy to leave the rest for me to dispose of. He is in no way a guts.

Thanks for all the help thus far :happydance2:

I find how much they eat (Anatolians and Central Asians here) depend on individuality - two of my ASD girls are tubbies :grimace: another is more circumspect about what she eats and when.

The dogs eat more over the cooler months and when they are growing (tubbies excluded - they always want to eat more).

By far I feed the most to adult male CAo - he eats about double the amount of my adult Anatolian male, though the CAO has a higher proportion of muscle and is a bigger dog, 92kgs cf 66kg.

All the dogs are fed on:

raw meaty beef bones, beef offcuts, beef marrow bones, lamb flaps, lamb marrow bones, sardines, tuna, eggs, milk.

not much chicken as wary of the hormones etc

but when they are fed chicken they get chicken frames. but maybe about 2 a month each and only if the meat supply is out of beef.

cost per week to feed 7 dogs:

about $50 per week.

I dont feed supplements,

except for apple cider vinegar in their drinking water

and occassional calcium for a puppy/youngster.

I hope they don't cost that much

I'm getting my newfie pup in Aug/Sep!

When I had my lab and medium cross breed, I spent maybe $30-$40 a week.

They won't cost that much...Even using the best food. I bet you are exited about the pup

I'm super excited! Except I got the months wrong...I should be getting my newfie in October/November!

And MAD, congratulations on the puppy

Thanks! I have waited so long already and don't know how much more I can wait until I burst! :)

Take heart i waited for a whole year for Katy, because i wanted a special lineage and girl.....It is all worth the wait

We think we pay about $20-30 per week )does include all the supplements).....I do use a lot of chicken, but ours come from an organic free-range place. And we have our own too (eggs). And I am luck, because we have a great butcher

I have a question, which may seem naive to some, but im not sure. I often feed my Dogue De Bordeaux chicken necks, and he really enjoys them. Now i have gotten my hands on a lot of different chicken parts (all raw), including wings, legs, necks, frames and heads.

My question is in regards to the heads, which are of course attached to the necks - is it safe to feed him the whole thing (neck and head), or should i remove the head?
