ness
Anything by Greg Derrett, Susan Garrett is worth getting a hold of. Moe's Strenfel's Agility Foundation dvd is also a good one. Edited March 3, 2010 by ness

Thanks :-) So far I have found the most useful DVD to be Susan Garrett's Success With One Jump - lots of exercises you can do with one or no jumps - from sending to focus work to obstacle focus to handling moves such as front and rear crosses, serpentines, pull throughs and more. Casima
Can I ask what might seem like a stupid question but because I can run fast enough to not worry about having her at a distance would you work on that and let the distance come later. So run with her rather than try to handle stuff at a distance for the time being. Guess I am saying should I be pushing her and in effect challenging her to keep speed up by running her as I would my older one. Hi again Ness, glad to hear training went well and you broke things down more, sounds great I would always choose to run as much as I can on a course even tho my dogs have very decent distance skills. It will help your dogs confidence and speed, usually the more you put into a run the more your dog will too also your own acceleration and deceleration on course are great cues for your dog, eg if you are accelerating or running flat out your dog should be driving that line along parrallel to you (hopefully powering ahead) if you then slow down comming up to a turn the dog should read that as part of your turn cue before perform a front cross etc which gives them more information about where they are going giving you tighter turns and better lines around the course. Lastly, I don't find my agility runs nearly as fun for me if I haven't run too and I am not an athletic person Having said all that, I am usually about 1-2 metres lateral through most of the course and especially at the lead out you don't want the dog needing to see you through the uprights to take the jumps. I didn't ever teach my dogs distance, it all came on its own, smaller or dogs with less drive may need to be taught, but Kenzie should be good. If you pay attention to setting your dog on a good line on course all the time, and have built value for the equipment you should find it wont matter if you are 1m lateral or 10, you are driving the parralel line they should drive it too. Or if your movment is supporting the dog to send ahead it should go on the line you have set, just don't get stuck on a distance line as the dog should come to you if you are stopped. If you get a chance at the end of training after running trickier courses with lots of handling, its great to set up a quick speed circle to let her blast around, work on some lateral distance there, hopefully this will help her look where she is going too. Too much turning work without fast bits can permanently slow up some dogs if you arn't careful. So far I have found the most useful DVD to be Susan Garrett's Success With One Jump - lots of exercises you can do with one or no jumps - from sending to focus work to obstacle focus to handling moves such as front and rear crosses, serpentines, pull throughs and more. I will second this recommendation great for building the dogs understanding of your handling cues and building value and focus for the equipment... you can also swap (most of) it around to be "1 tunnel" or "1 tyre" or "1 seesaw" etc great stuff
RallyValley
Amypie this Friday it is likely that Toby and another dog at my club will be getting measured. (I am being peer pressured by my club to enter Toby in novice jumping at nationals ) Ness if RubyStar dosen't need it I would be interested buying your book. I'll try and read it by Sunday so I can give it to you then. Or Tuesday.Well the first trial was going to be the midweek ACWA jumping trial but having trouble tracking down someone to measure him and entries close on Monday! pie
Oh really, I emailed someone today and they have given me the name of someone getting measured at a Teams Event on Sunday, but I can't find anywhere that says there is actually anything on this weekend! Could you let me know if yours are getting measured on Friday and I can go there. Do it Valley! I'll be in Novice Jumping at the Nationals too

RallyValley
Will have to find my mobile phone (I am always losing the damn thing) and give my instructor a call, if its not this Friday it will be the next one at agility training at Ashfield reserve in Bassendean. Will confirm time and which week as soon as I find phone.

I'm so confused with the measuring - I basically want Ruby measured soon in preparation for Open obedience (if we ever get there ), but it wouldn't hurt to get Millie measured at the same time. Oh and thanks! Edited March 4, 2010 by RubyStar

ness
Ok another quick agility update from me - Took her to a new club tonight just for something different. Decided 1 night of agility a week isn't really enough and I wanted her to have some exposure to other gear. I opted to put her into intermediate as I wasn't sure what she would do with the different gear or the different environment. Also thought short definite sequence stuff might be better for her then long courses. Well some things went well - her SLS behavior held up nicely - she gave me a lovely 4 jump lead out . Her contacts - we had a see-saw and a scramble. Her first scramble she stopped at the top and crept into her 2o/2o. The second time she went straight into a 2o/2o at the end with no creeping and didn't slide like she did at training last night. Her see-saw was great. Its a much heavier see-saw then our club one but no issue with doing probably a faster and more confident see-saw then she does on the lighter one. Was able to work through her weaving issue - once she understood that I wanted her to weave like I did with the ones she is use to (these ones are stick in the ground and look different) she was driving through them nicely. My only real disappointment is she is probably not as fast as I know she can be. Now I am not sure if that was a combination of new environment (although she would play tug with me) or just that she is still lacking confidence. She was also only jumping 400 tonight so I guess I thought she might move a bit quicker. Edited March 4, 2010 by ness
