J...
Have just been away camping for an agility seminar for a few days and need to head back Thurs (away til Sunday). Made up a raw vegie/fruit mix before I left and took my usual additives with me - yoghurt, protein and supplements. Unfortunately the good esky I bought isn't as good as I thought and I don't think it is keeping the mush and yoghurt cold enough. Ended up feeding chicken wings for tea last night (straight from the supermarket deli). Has anyone successfully fed just chicken wings for a few days while away? I know it's not ideal balance wise but I'm at a loss on the best way to feed them while away without decent refrigeration and the chicken wings are easy to get and feed straight away. Yep. 4 Legs is my stand by too, Not raw but not bad.
Tilly
I will be taking my boy camping and I also feed raw. I was going to use dry ice and place wet towels on the top to keep the cold in ...
Red Fox
I'm thinking of trying this: http://www.k9natural.co.nz/K/K9-Natural-Pr..._I.2063/_C.2070 Seems like it would be much easier than carting the esky around.
JulesP
If you read the Give my Dog a Bone book you will see that the idea is to balance the food over a week. Each meal doesn't have to be balanced. It is supposed to be an easy way of feeding ;) I personally would rather feed natures gift tinned or kibble rather than risk salmonella. J...
The freeze dried stuff looks great but I'd prefer not to change their diet if I can avoid it which is why the chicken wings would suit. Darcy is on raw as she doesn't tolerate grain/preservatives that well. I could feed some grain free Artemis for a few days but once again it's a diet change with a potential for belly aches. ;) I'm not worried about the nutritional balance of the diet as it's only 4 days, I am more worried about the physical balance of a diet of chicken wings for 4 days i.e with no fibre to give it a hand to pass through? Asalei
I was wondering this same thing, we are going to Sydney for four days over Easter (driving down) and I have been wondering how we are going to keep my girls raw meat cold. I was thinking of thawing it a bit, mixing in their glyde powder, then freezing again in bags for each day. We are lucky that we only have one day without a freezer (the day we drive down), so it'll only be 10 hours that we have to keep it cold and/or frozen. I was also thinking the dry ice option in a esky. I'm not really a fan of putting them onto kibble for the four days because I don't like the thought of them maybe getting diahorrea or what ever whilst driving all that way. What about adding psylium husk for the fibre every 2nd day? All you have to do is mix a couple of teaspoons of it with a bit of water, wait a minute until it forms a gel and then add it to the food. I use it sometimes when Kei is a little blocked up and it works well. It's around $5 from the health food store for a decent sized packet. You could go chicken wings for one meal and then mince (or steak) or even canned mackeral for the other which would give it a bit of balance without too much stress. Even plain yogurt is easily found in most stores so that would be easy enough to add if you wanted. I am worried about a sudden change of diet if I try the freeze dried stuff too but it is supposed to be pretty close to natural raw. I am hoping (if I can afford to) to buy 2 small bags and try one at home first to see how we go. At $26 for only a few days worth (well for us anyway) it is quite pricey - but certainly convenient for a few days away
Seita
If I'm away I just bring frozen meat with me and feed that. I figure if I feed RMB for a few days while I'm away and then a few days of veggie mix once we're home it's even. If I was going away for longer than a couple of days without access to a freezer I think I'd get some dry to bring along instead.
Stolzseinrotts
Travelling whilst feeding a BARF diet can be done without to much effort. When we travel to and from shows we feed chicken frames or similar from the Supermarket Deli, cans of sardines and other raw meaty bones (lamb / beef). This will be fine for many days if needed. If you have access to a fridge / freezer it is even better than having to purchase RMB's each day. Also if you have access to a fridge freezer we take already premade BARF patties packed in an esky and transfered to a fridge on arrival. These are to expensive for us to feed on a regular basis (we make up our own mix) but these are very handy when travelling with your dogs. I use to take everything but it is not really worth the extra effort (a lot was wasted), just take what you need for the travelling part and get what you need when you get to your destination. There are always Supermarkets open or butchers about. Also as suggested 4Legs is another option when travelling and we have used this when needed or even as a treat when on the road. Dogsfevr
I dont feed solely raw but i always have a diet that is suitable for any occasion & can be adjusted according to travel or able to be brought at the local /shop butcher. I have an esky etc etc but i will happily say there is a limit to what i will cart just for the sake of it when i have a good stand bye on hand that works & has aswell been used at home for these situations
Leema
I just feed a good quality dry when I'm away. Dog doesn't care. Easiest for me. It's balance over time not every meal. If I was nuts about not feeding dry, though, I'd just get chicken wings or drumsticks when I got there - either get one a day (small dog!), or buy some and fridge it. If I was away for two nights or less, I'd possibly fast the whole time. Edited February 24, 2010 by Leema
piper
I used to travel from Adelaide to Melbourne a few times a year for agility, stay in a tent and feed raw. And when doing my CGC instructors course I was away for nearly 2 weeks and managed raw. I would take 2 bone meals with me in an esky, frozen. They would do the first and second night. I bought Vets All Natural as it was easier to manage when away than veggie miz. So an ice cream container of dry VAN plus a spare container to make it up in. I would also take tins of sardines to mix with that. So third night would be VAN with sardines. After that I would hit a supermarket and get whatever offal or bones I could get and use that for the next night and would basically alternate going to the shops with a night of VAN if away longer than 5 days. For the CGC course we did have access to some refridgeration so I took 2 or 3 days worth of bones/offal with me.
cris
I am already sold on the idea of raw feeding our new puppy, I came across some interesting websites and will order the relevant books in the next day or two. I have been feeding my puppy chicken necks, a bit of mince with raw egg and a bit of kangaroo meat, spread over a few meals of course. I make sure she gets the chicken necks at every meal though, for the benefit of her teeth. In reading these posts, regarding the fiber question, these days sprouts are available at supermarkets too, like alfalfa or other spouted beans and grains. Should that be OK for a dog? They are partially digested seeds, grains, may emulate the grass the wolf eats in the wild after a meal ... If you are away camping, they are not hard to grow yourself too! Just curious, I will be showing her in the future, so I will need to know what to do too ...
WreckitWhippet
I take an esky packed full of the dogs frozen wings, flaps and roo tails and I find it takes a few days to thaw out anyway. Pack wings into iceream containers.
