I am about to get a new puppy in about 3 weeks, and am currently trying to decide between a boy and a girl. Obedience is something I want to look into, so just wondering if anyone has noticed a difference between genders. General perception on the internet seems to be that girls are more focused and easier to train, but the boys are more loving. Has anyone found this to be the case?

All I can say is, I trialled a bitch to CD several years ago, whereas my "heart dog", Niki was HOPELESS in the Obedience Ring - he knew all the exercises and could do them perfectly in class but always had to stuff something up in the Ring :( He was very, very affectionate & loving, though!

IME my males have been more loyal and affectionate, i wouldnt say they are easier to train but my girls were more likely to forget / ignor a recall they are called bi*ch for a reason LOL, i wouldnt know about obiediance training differance as i hvnt done this before diesel :(

Hey poodlemum, we are opposites. I had a bitch in obedience, hopeless... But she is a Pointer too... She wasn't food driven, toy driven, praise driven...

I've got another girl who is hopeless, but she has been show trained... So no sitting around people or food. :(

I've got a little man, called Shaun, he is smart, and loves his food. Easy to train.

And I have a GSP 10 month old boy who I have had for a month and a half now, and he is the smartest one of the lot. Willing to please, food, toy and praise driven. I love him to bits. :banghead:

Thanks guys for the answers, I liked the boy a little bit more anyway and now what I'm hearing is that gender won't really make a huge difference, except that perhaps the boys are a bit more loving and affectionate. Can't wait to get my little boy!

Please feel free to keep voting and adding comments though, it's very interesting.

Niki was very smart & learned quickly - when I was instructing obedience he was a great "demo dog". No good in the ring, though - one week he would "forget" how to sit & the next he would "forget" how to drop, so I knew he was just yanking my chain

ETA - I wish I had done Obedience or Agility with my GSP, but I didn't even know such things existed and didn't realise the significance of the CDX's and UD's in his pedigree!

What did I read in a book on the weekend:

Obedience: A dog sport founded on the proposition that any dog can be trained to behave like a Golden Retriever. :happydance2:

Good thing My goldie gets here on Thursday. Maybe he can teach Ruff a thing or two :(

As one who is "owned" by a Goldie I can assure you he'll teach Ruff and YOU a thing or two :)
