Where Does Your Puppy Sleep?

We have a CKCS X who will be 11 weeks old on Sunday. She sleeps in our ensuite. We bought a baby gate to go up but she just walks through the bars! Haha! So I covered them in cardboard boxes...she chewed threw it! So we went back to the good old suitcase in the doorway trick. That worked well until recently when she bacame strong enought to push the suitcase and get out.

She sleeps till 4am or 5am and then decides its time to get out of the ensuite! Admitingly we have let her do this, taking her out to toilet and then leaving her with her bed and toys and TV for company in the large open planned tiled area. This morning she escaped at 4am and my fiance put her just outside our bedroom door with her bed and closed the door...when I got up at 6am she was in her bed sleeping outside our door!!!

So...my question is...should we change where she sleeps? I know that giving in to her is teaching her that its ok to get out in the middle of the night but its SOOOOOO hard to lie there listening to her carry on at 4am when you know you have to get up at 6am!

We have a bathroom at the other end of the house that we could use...she also has a wire playpen...our laundry is not really an option as its in our double LUG.

Any advice welcome!

Hi, Why dont you get her a crate, she can sleep close to you and she wont be able to escape and she will/should cry in the middle of the night when she wants to go to the loo. When she is in the crate you have more control over where she is and dont have to worry about her roaming the house while your asleep. She might not like it at first but be consistant, and you will be suprised how quickly she takes to it. My first 3 never slept in a crate but my pup who is now 2 slept in a crate as he cried non stop for 2 nights in our ensuite, so a crate beside the bed was the only answer and it works, he still sleeps in it now. I only ever used the crate for sleeping. Good luck with your pup.

Amber is either sleeping in her pen in the kitchen or outside with the big dogs. She is 10 weeks old and I haven't heard a squeak out of her. The first week I did have a babysitter (older dog) in the room with her. The cats also sleep in the kitchen.

I was thinking about this...but wondered if she would HATE it! How would I get her used to a crate?

Where's her pen set up?

Its set up in the kitchen/dining/lounge open plan area. So not close to where we sleep at all. We COULD set it up near our front door - so just outside our room...but I think she would object to being in there while we are in the room BIG TIME!!!

I think crate training would be the way to go then. You can have her close but contained.

I started Howard my youngest dog in a crate. He now sleeps in a basket by my bed.

Ok so if we were to do crate training where do I start?

How big should the crate be? Should I get rid of the playpen?

Do I put her in the crate - with her bed - and close the door on the first night and expect her to just sleep through? Or will she cry and carry on?

Bear in mind that it's American and they tend to have their dogs crated a lot more than we do.

I'd never support leaving a dog crated without a break while I'm at work but I don't have 10 feet of snow, bears, alligators, cougars or coyotes in my back yard either.

I still feed Howard in his crate and use it to teach "wait" and "go". He has to sit and wait to enter and leave.. a useful exercise in self control.

Susan Garrett's "crate games" is a good book if you'd like to use the crate to teach some skills to the dog.

Poodlefan - Could I use her playpen for her to sleep in? The reason I ask is that I payed A LOT for it and we only really use it when we go out. So instead of buying a crate and using that...could we just use the pen?

Am I being too smothering by wanting to have her in our room? I guess I just thought thats where dogs sleep but maybe I'm wrong!

I was never a fan of crates till my youngest dog came along, he was just so hard to deal with at bed time, he wouldnt let the other dogs sleep if we left him out of the ensuite and if he went in the ensuite with the door shut you could hear him a mile away. The crate saved my sanity and we never looked back. He was never a dog to go to the loo through the night but if he did need to go, he would just have a little cry and out we go and strait back in not a problem. I did however have a problem moving him to the other side of the room, another 2 nights of crying (this was done when he was 18 months old) but then he settled. I still feel bad that he sleeps in the crate now, occasionally he has slept on the bed and if he is tired he is fine. The main reason for him being crated at night is he wants to disrupt the other dogs and play all night  I joke he is an eternal puppy and still at 2 years old he hasnt changed!! But he likes the crate and quite happily goes in there at bed time. My lot always get a treat at bed time so as soon as he sees the treat he is sitting at the door to the crate waiting to go in.

Dogs are social animals - the pack sleeps together. Having your dog sleep in the same room as you is an appropriate thing to do IMO.

Problem with pens as I see them is that many dogs can climb out of them and therefore they aren't really safe to leave a dog in unsupervised for any length of time. A pen also provides space for a pup to eliminate away from where it eats and sleeps. That won't help with toilet training.

You could always buy a crate and sell the pen to offset your costs. A good crate can be used when you travel, for trips to the vet, in the car etc.. a pen can't.

For a dog of Poppy's size, I'd suggest an airline approved crate like a Vari Kennel or similar. Not cheap but will last forever. You can get PP 40's for a good price.

All mine sleep in our room and have done since they were pups. Dogs are pack animals and love to be with their humans.

Could you fit the play pen in your room?

PF I posted at the same time  People think we are wierd having ours sleep in the bedroom but it suits us and them so why not!!

I'm glad your able to validate my feelings of wanting her close! Another forum I'm on are telling me to stop treating her like a baby, put her in the main bathroom, let her cry it out and dont go to her till the next morning! I just dont think I can do it!

Can you give me a link of the type of crate your talking about?

I found these...

How exactly do they propose you stop her going to the loo - with a cork?? Or are continued accidents inside an acceptable part of this program?
