Savane Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share Posted February 17, 2010 I have a Border Collie and Ridgeback pup and a Golden Retriever, elderly adult, I have always used a hydrobath man to come over and wash the older dog and there are no skin issues, but he also needed a good groom at the time after which I found him easier to maintain. The pups I would like to bath myself. A lot of people like Aloveen but personally I think it's overpriced. I like most of the Fidos shampoos. A conditioning one like the Emu Oil would be good for longer and short coats. I use Groomers Evening Primrose Oil on my poodles and Whippet. Not the cheapest but its very good. skip Posted February 17, 2010 Share Posted February 17, 2010 One of mine is sensitive to grass and he seems to be getting more allergic to things as he gets older. I use Natural shampoo from Dermcare (vet purchase) as it works and is fairly inexpensive. It has coconut oil and no soap. My dogs coats are very soft and people often comment but don't know if that is really the shampoo or not. Just type of coats they have. I have a shampoo based on emu oil and one I brought at Orange based on Olive oils. Both seemed OK but don't think they were that special. I also use at times a shampoo with an oatmeal base from Fido which was reccommended to me. It seems good too and the oatmeal base is good, suposed to help with odours?. Definitely a long way from the first shampoo I brought when I got my dogs which was $2 green stuff from Reject shop. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I buy the Groomers Evening Primrose Oil Shampoo from here If you want really upmarket stuff, Petnetwork stocks a lot of brands. Plush Puppy is an Australian range that's very good and Petnetwork have it. Both stores are in Victoria which should keep postage down. mutt lover Posted February 18, 2010 Share Posted February 18, 2010 I either use an oatmeal shampoo or the alloveen, but have also used just the plain old pears soap as its non allergenic and is very good and smells lovely. Have been told by vets but may not be right that some supermarket type dog shampoo's are just basically detergent and will cause itchy inflammed skin, don't know as I've never used them. Mine is a smooth fox terrier who has allergies starting in spring and goes till autumn, so am assuming it is grass or pollen related. I have an oatmeal based shampoo that I have used a few times (also a leave in oatmeal treatment from same company), but not convinced it does anything. I have just about finished a 'hypoallergenic' one that i picked up on sale months ago. One vet told me that *some* dogs actually react to the oatmeal and that you have to be careful.
