Tassie
HAW not required for Novice/CD - it's only when you get up to Open - for the jumps. Looks like you and Ramses are going to be busy - very best of luck to you. :D
spoilt lab lives here
Thanks Tassie. The September Gazette was like a goldmine compared to the boring August one The trial on 29thOct has a cool special assistance ring set up where anyone can go in it and test out other rings. Im thinking it will be a good training session in the trial environment for the novice ring to gauge where we are at wihtout actually being in the ring formally. RubyStar
We won't be back in the obedience ring until next year. Open is requiring a fair bit of tweaking and I am not getting great consistency in some of the exercises yet so we need time to work on them. I was hoping to enter UD either end of the year or early next year while night trials are on (no way I think they could go that long in a UD ring in the heat/sun!) but we are nooooo way going to be ready! UD needs a LOT of tweaking So we might not make our UD debut until about this time next year. Boo!!!! In the meantime, I will just keep putting the girls in Open in the night time trials. I think I am a little over trialling during the day Night time trials are good because you can relax your nerves with a little

RallyValley
I have Toby in a CCD trial this month and if he seems ok on the day I will do the heel work and maybe the recall. But my big summer project will be doing even more work with his anxiety, trying to get him through some of these issues that cause him to shut down. I am really enjoying training Zora but am not rushing her, although saying that her progress is good. We move up to puppy class 2 in agility when it resumes back and will have a few weeks of that before I go away. I think I am going to hold Toby back from a CCD trial again until I hear about Rally-O Ideally I would like to use getting his Rally titles to build confidence in ringwork/trial environments to prepare us for CCD and later CD. It's so great to read all the time how everyone else is going and really spurs me on to make an effort with my dogs!
RubyStar
We move up to puppy class 2 in agility when it resumes back and will have a few weeks of that before I go away. I thought puppy class 2 was for pups 6 months and over? So you won't be in my class with Pippa, then? Pippa has had her first schnauzer haircut and she doesn't look like Pippa anymore - she looks like a, gasp, schnauzer!!!! She's got such a tiny head because her body still has baby fluff so they didn't clip that yet.

Plus Zora will be 5 and a half months when classes start.

Henrietta
I'm a longtime lurker in this thread as I am very interested in training (obedience and agility especially.) I have an almost 5 year old girl (Abby) who is just beginning to start loving her agility after a lot of hard work and a very steep learning curve for me. I'll never compete with Abby because of some temperament issues (fear aggression, confidence issues.) We are very much improved in this regard but I will never have the nerve to do much more than plod along in highly controlled environments and otherwise manage the situation at other times. I am very interested in starting to teach some obedience behaviours. For her benefit - something else to learn and to strengthen our training partnership further, and for my own benefit as a learning exercise and with future dogs in mind. I'm really quite excited and I really don't think it's a waste of time for either of us. She already has a fairly good heel over short distances, a nice automatic sit, a pretty reliable drop. My main 'issue' at the moment is that she does tend to lag slightly, but she is still looking enthused about the whole thing. She is only small, so I worry I'm walking too fast. Sometimes on my turns she also lags. I'm really trying to build up the heel as an awesome and fun exercise, so very short stretches. I am about to build up our stay durations and I thought I might start some dumbell (?) work and formal recall. Stand for exam with people she knows. Further down the track I'd love to practice some scent discrimination exercises, I reckon they'd be right up her alley lol. Yes, so I may start popping in a bit more in this thread. Oh - and I'm just starting to teach a stand. Edited October 5, 2011 by Henrietta
Mason_Gibbs
Ness i trained heelwork offlead but for people who have dogs who love other dogs and other people it does make u feel secure but looking at Masons round at states i think his heelwork looks better offlead... Tassie
@ Henrietta - sounds like you and Abbey are going to have lots of fun. See if you can find a club which is doing Rally O - the Novice level is on lead - and no stays (well not until Excellent - and then not a group stay.) I think you and Abbey would really enjoy that. Maybe PM jeb5 who might know of a club near you doing Rally O.

Ptolomy
Some of the CCD rounds are a lot harder than others and I/we have found that a lot of the Queensland judges will give you every position in every pace, so effectively the CCD heelwork is as hard as the Open heelwork. This is STrauss's CCD round from Monday at the Royal. Very tough for a baby dog. http://www.youtube.com/watch\?v=CX9rVfl-ETQ
ness
Strauss did very well Ptolomy - certainly a performance not to be sneezed at - not bad for only going to be a stud dog . Edited October 5, 2011 by ness
wuffles
Strauss looks great Ptolomy, definitely a big ask for a baby dog! The judges seem to vary a lot here with their patterns. I have had some super long ones with each position in each speed, and I have also had the odd short one. Same as distances for the recall - have had some huge ones and some short ones! huski
Strauss is so cute! I've never had (or seen) a short CCD pattern. Every QLD judge I know will do a position in every pace, so there is no difference in the length or level of difficulty of heelwork in CCD, Novice and Open (apart from CCD being on lead). I wish we'd have shorter heel patterns for each class like they do in other states, as I think it's better for greener dogs (and handlers).
