Spoilt, to be honest, I never really taught Daisy to look at me or focus during heelwork specifically (though I do reward for it) - I found it happened naturally when I made the game fun and if I had drive from her she would naturally look up at me and focus on me. Everyone is different though and so is every dog!

I feel your pain as this was me a couple of weeks ago.

Hey we could always go to the pub while in Sydney and tell everybody we couldn't find the show grounds

I thought I might post this one here - it's Kenz's Novice Round from last Sunday's trial. She has certainly come a long way from the shy timid little girl who wouldn't even work around strangers without crumbling let alone give me pushy work with attitude and stand solid on her stand for exam.

Very pleased with her work - just a shame she didn't nail the sit stay to come away with the pass. Ah well she will get there.

Can I ask what you lost the points for? It all looked pretty good to me :p

She would have lost points in the heelwork for being ahead a little and her positions being a tad forward and not totally square. Points off on the recall I suspect for her squiffy finish. Not sure on the COP - considering she got full marks on her SFE but moved her back foot (LOL), at the time I thought she might have moved a back foot when I left her on the COP too but no.

Kenz tends to work a little forward and a little crabbed (her Saturday round was worse and she was only on a 183). She hasn't had much proper training lately because of her niggling re-occuring shoulder injury so when we do anything she is just a little rough around the edges.

Although it was a nice round especially considering it was the middle of the afternoon by the time she was in the ring (they had CCD before Novice) and it was fairly warm to be out trialling and it was day 2. Lots of the Novice dogs were totally off with the fairies and lagging so all things considered she worked very very well. She was also not a happy girl on Sunday and a little flat and really she just wanted to stay in her crate.

Thanks for explaining, I thought it looked very nice. Ava works a little forward as well if I rev her up too much beforehand (or use a smelly reward like sardines, as I found out the other day) but IMO that is better than lagging. I loved your about turns :(

Even thought I am hoping it is all fixed soon Bedazzled, it does make me feel a little better when trainers like yourself, Ptolomy and others have difficulties with things. Makes me feel like not such a bad trainer and failure . Having said that yours are of course working at a MUCH higher level than mine

Hope that comes out the way I meant it!! :)

Basically it's a handful of food - not crumbly and easy to see. Toss one way 'get it' and one the dog runs and eats it throw one in the opposite (approx) direction and repeat. You can also use toys if preferred. I love using it to build motivation and excitement with my Dally and, with Em, I mainly use it to get her running away from me - as she turns from eating a treat I can call 'sit' - which is how I taught a stop for retrieving. Also great for breaking a position so she can find it again eg 'front'. You can also incorporate rapid sit and drop games (great for teaching discrimination). Does that help?
