We are both are a work in progress  LOTS of trial and error to be honest. When he was going through the terrible teenager stage (which lasted from about 9 to 18 months) I started feeding all his food to him in training at home plus used great treats outside home. Definitely a little tough love there! I also cottoned on to his love of sniffing and marking so used that as a reward for training - started off with a few seconds focus, reinforce with food and release.

That sounds awfully familiar! Erik is just over 18 months old and still acts like an adolescent. When he was about 8 months old he could only focus for about 10 seconds when we were out and about and maybe a minute at home. So we trained in 5 second blocks in the park and 30 seconds at home. Thankfully, he's over that at least. Waiting patiently for the mature dog his breeder keeps promising we'll get eventually. :bolt:

Zig looks great!

He is just at the age of taking off with everything as a wonderful trophy

Had to laugh at this bedazzledx2. Reminded me of when I took the dogs up to Sue H's Cam Tailwagger's camp - Sue nicknamed 9 month old Rory 'The kidnapper'. He still kidnaps his tuggies and toys and does vistory laps with them - but luckily, that hasn't translated to his training gear - DB, articles etc.

....just wait!!! I got a new toy for Brookie...a squeaky chook...and produced it when he did some nice positions in motion. I got it back 5 minutes later after he had done several victory laps with it!!!

 bedazzledx2. Hmmm I can counter offer your victory laps with a certain midgety black and white depositing no joke a 0.5cm sliver of bark in my lap and then backing up waiting for me to throw it. I humored her once and she bought it straight back and waited again.

Anyone would think she is fed up with this shoulder injury as much as I am. Bring on a sound dog who can get back to training - been a long 4 months :).

Here's Erik showing off on the logs at the dog park, as requested by Cosmolo.

I even left Kivi in there trying to muscle in on Erik's moment. OH has been trained well, though. I grumble at him every time he lets one of the dogs interrupt what I'm doing with the other one and he has learnt to pay attention and call them away. I reward this with kisses and thankyous.

WARNING! WARNING! TAKE COVER!!! :)

In a very rash moment I entered Croydon trial on April 17. Originally I had decided not to enter anything until May (Berwick) but I have been going down to FOO at KCC Park and Cindy did SO WELL on Tuesday night I thought why not! In the cold light of day it seems somewhat brazen. HeHe. Now you will all remember the panic-ridden posts when I was in CCD so just wiat for the CD ones.

I know that Cindy is close to ready but I know that I am not so when I panic:

1. Do this to me :cheer:

2. Remind me that I do it because it is fun

To try and calm myself I set myself the goals of:

Enjoy the ring

Good return to heel following recall

Not missing any drops

Keeping my own speed even during the heeling pattern

Argh now that you have entered you can come and join myself and Bedazzled and watch it all come tumbling down :p Our current training plan is called break, patch, repair as best you can and cross your fingers :) This is followed up by mumbling something about whose great idea it was to enter the upcoming trial. Add to this the fact that ALL our other class exercises are crumbling and our confidence is down around our knees.

I guess the only way is UP from here - so wishing you Good Luck, stay calm and looking forward to hearing how you get on.

I have blown the dust off Soggy and will be bringing her out for her first trial in 5 months this weekend. Looking forward to seeing what she remembers ;)

 Then I'm right on track following the guru training plan. :p Rory failed his heeling on Sunday - mega distracted, missed drops and a sit. BUT - his SFE was rock solid - yay, and he came in fast on the recall even though it was a short distance - did sit wonky though. I didn't bother with stays or the afternoon trial - don't want him practising mistakes.

Good luck S&C and WA troops.

:cheer: Jules P - know what you mean.

I've got pretty used to failing over the years (bad trainer :) ) so it doesn't bother me too much. This past weekend was the second weekend of our double agility trial weekend, so by Sunday I probably didn't have my head or Rory's in the right place for obedience. I'd not entered Kirra in agility on the Sunday, figuring I'd concentrate on him  - but I hadn't really done enough with him in the week leading up - and the environment was pretty distracting for him. So after our llittle 'display', I just went back to spend most of the day at agility - which was about 50 metres away. I was disappointed in a way - but on the other hand, really pleased with aspects of what he'd done - and anyway, it's a chance to spend the day with friends and acquaintances. It probably didn't help that I'd broken me and Kirra on the Saturday - I pulled a quad in the morning (though we still managed a Master's Jumping pass, and a near miss in Open Jumping) and then on the last run of the day, she pulled up lame in the right hind, so I was panicking a bit that she might have done a cruciate. Turns out it was just a hamstring strain/mild tear, thank goodness, and she's coming on fine. Phew!

This might be a strange question....

Tassie, Bedazzled & Ptolomy - did you still enjoy the trials?

Ours hasn't happened yet, but the thought of spending $1000 to get to one trial is a bit  and puts extra pressure on to not look like we have never had a training session in our lives and know nuffing :cheer: The fact that we have a lot of fun travelling together, the dogs get on well and we WILL find the closest liquor shop will mean we will enjoy the trip :)

Whenever we have gone away in the past we have always had a great leadup, done all the distraction training which at least meant mentally you knew you couldn't have done any more - not this time!!!

Are you talking about the Sydney Royal? When is that?

I would love to go to the Obedience Nationals in Brissy this year, but like you said, the thought of spending $1000 for a trial and then blowing it doesn't sit well with me! I am used to blowing trials, and I still have fun because it's a nice day/evening out with friends, but I think I have convinced myself there is no use travelling for a big trial until me and my dogs are more experienced  Shame really because the nationals this year would be fun!

But Ptolomy we did appreciate you coming to the Royal those 2 years it was great fun catching up and you even did well in Adelaide both years :) . I am sure Sydney will go just as well or be just as enjoyable.

Although Adelaide has far better wine and chocolate :rofl::rofl: .

14th April

Rubystar Maybe you need to think of it as a holiday with your kids. We have a lot of fun , usually end up clothes shopping and as I said the boys get on so well that it makes life very easy. We have a bit of a routine, share the cooking duties, although Bedazzled is a much better cook than I am - so I usually organise the dog treats. I drive, Debazzled navigates and it works really well. The difference this time will be ..........a third dog  , so instead of hiring a 4WD we have had to go for a Van, we are on different flights, so hopefully everything will work out OK.

Its something you should put on your todo list, its kind of addictive in a way, meeting new people, watching how others do things and if your dog does well - its the icing on the cake. If all else fails - there is always the nice cheese, the chocolate and the coldies in the fridge waiting for us when we get home

As someone who has tagged along part of one of these weekends I have to say they are very fun :) I think going alone would be a little depressing though unless you knew people at the other end.

I went away for a 3 day Easter (retrieving) trial with Lablover and a few other gals and we all stayed in a big rambling house - had the best time. Up very early to travel to the next town for the trial each day and sat around each night enjoying dinner and a glass of wine (or 2 :)) I camped in Sydney last year (on my own) for the Dalmatian Nationals to save costs and also had a great week away - didn't know anyone doing obedience/jumping/agility apart from Zig's breeders. I may also tag along with friends to the retrieving nationals this year (not competing mind you!!!)

JulesP - there was a discussion about that on Clean Run recently and the excellent point was made that a lot of horse people train but don't compete.

I have to agree RallyValley I think its more fun when you have somebody to share the experience with.

So........maybe you and Rubystar need to make some plans

TSD - it wont be long before you are competing at the Retrieving Nationals the way you are going :)
