It's great to be able to have it at trials, isn't it, RS - really gets the message out. And the dogs certainly love it, if the ones we see here are any guide. Rory certainly does. He did a nice round at club the other day - watched me nicely all the way round.

Only thing is, after all those ears trying to walk straight in the ob ring, I still have trouble positioning myself neatly on the line to be in position for the next sign - is that just me? (Probably - slow learner  )

I will obviously be doing Rally. :)

I didn't make it to (the last!) training tonight because there was a bush fire in the adjoining suburb and my aunty had to be evacuated. So I need some feedback on Toby's work so far. We started properly working on this stuff about a week before this video on Sunday but I would like for people to please pick us to pieces so I can see what I am doing wrong, I know that my fronts are awful so any tips would be appreciated. :D

Not a fan on picking :) But some suggestions. When you did your line up command your marking was a bit late. Try and get the good boy in straight away. Are you actually using marking? You seem to say both 'yes' and 'good boy'.

Line-up and Round also seemed to be commands for the same thing. Is there a reason you aren't saying heel?

When Toby dropped in his finish you patted him. Try to avoid rewarding the dog for the wrong thing.

With the nose touch were he stood up your hand was too high.

Toby is nicely attentive :)

Thanks for the feedback! :) 'Yes' is a marker word, but I tend to use 'good boy' as an affirmation if I miss the initial opportunity to mark or we are past the marking stage (i.e if I ask him to sit). I will work on getting my words tighter though. :)

I haven't really asked him to heel yet, he just chooses to stick by my side, I am waiting to give it a word until I am really happy with it. Last night in out session Toby seemed to click on fronts, so hopefully he will stay clicked until Sunday (week 2) of film so I can show off his improvement.

I am about to go and do my morning session and I will work on the words especially. ;)

Sorry RallyValley - I can't watch clips here at work BUT santa is getting me internet access at home for Xmas - so not too much longer to wait now

It's our last training session tonight before Xmas - think I am already in holiday mode

IMO you did ask him to go to heel with 3 different commands. Line up, round & finish. And the dog could have taken 'properly' to be a command too :)

I was going to come along, but I've been in holiday mode since the last obedience trial I was in in November  That and I got to work too late today to leave early :) I've been really struggling to get out of bed lately.

But it doesn't excuse me from working on some stuff at home. So that's my plan!

Question, when it says that in the figure of 8 a judge may replace a steward they don't actually mean while you are going around the figure 8 do they?

:)

No not whilst you are moving. You can have 2 stewards or a judge & steward.

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't trained since before Xmas! I figure we all need a break.

I would strongly advise anyone to teach the kickback stand. I never did with Brookie as he was a show dog first and had a pretty good stand on him so I wasn't about to break it. Problem is now there is UDX change of positions and he wants to take a step forward from the sit to the stand. Last thing I want is him moving forward on positions!!! Fortunately I taught him a fold back down so it kinda cancels it out.

Teach it in close from either in front or side by luring it with food from his nose down to his chest...he should move backwards to get it and you can click and treat and build from there.

OMG I killed the thread!! :)

Tonight I had my first proper session of shaping the dumbell with Toby using Shirley's method.

I am also curious - how have other people taught thier dog stand?

:) I broke a dog so I haven't trained since the 15th of December. Least she is looking a little less unbroken today  .

Caffy did a nice video of teaching Snazzy a kickback stand and posted it to youtube.

:) I very very highly doubt Toby will ever see the inside of an obdience ring, let alone a UDX one. But it will be good for me to learn how to teach a kick back stand. :)

My problem isn't getting the sit to the stand but getting the drop to the stand. I can get it with both a verbal and a signal but try and fade out either and its back to the drawing board. Occasional lightbulb moments but nothing concrete.

Funny thing is a fortnight of nothing and I solved my scooting forward on the sit that I use to get out of a drop.
