I was feeling really unenthused about obedience and after having a serious think about it I think that the idea of group stays with my boys just freaks me out too much and I would hate for them to ruin obedience for someone else. But realistacally for Toby and for Lincoln where he is right now (age and/or neuting may change this) I am not totally confident that should a dog come and stand over my dog in a group down and stand over him that they wouldn't growl or posture and I don't want to put the onus of not reacting back on some strangers dog.

Plus having that in my brain would freak me out and the dogs would know it. Still I am going to stick around this thread because I am training for rally-O and will definetly try and teach my boy's dumbell retrieves and scent discrimination. Basically one day i will have dogs that could do a UD round, but without the stays.

EFS

Maybe one day you can enter Lexi in open nfc or UD nfc and you can see how it feels :-)

I wasn't aware you could do a nfc in obedience, that's interesting Beagie

What is your routine when you arrive at a trial - how long before the trial starts do you get there?

How much warming up do people do before their turn in the ring and how long before hand do you get your dog out?

If I'm not in the first couple of dogs I usually turn up with about 15 minutes to go with vetting. If I'm one of the first in the ring I'm usually there earlier, say 30 min before end of vetting.

They're always crated after vetting. I usually get them out for a toilet break about 5-10 minutes before we are going in then back into the crate. I don't usually get them out until the dog before us is in the ring and then I do a bit of the 2 food game for Jedi and some of Abby's fav tricks for her to get them excited and then I just do a few turns and positions and then we go in.

Terranik - do you always get a catalogue ahead of time so you know when you are in??

We sometimes do for agility but very rarely for obedience.

Not a full catalogue, but the vast majority of trials give you a list of which class has which numbers allocated to it. So you can work out where you are (provided everyone turns up!).

E.g. CCD 1-15; Novice 16-34; Open 35-50; etc etc

Lets put forward the motion to get rid of the group stays in the next rule changes :)

I'm nervous about stays to

Now that I have mainly fixed my laying down in the sit stay I am pretty much not fussed about stays at this stage - its the heelwork that freaks me out. If our heelwork was better I would say that we are ready to trial as most of our other stuff like positions etc are ok but its the heelwork I need to work on.

Same as us  I am not in a hurry as my girl is still so young but it does get a bit frustrating! :cheer:

the other way round here, got my heelwork nice and focused and now our stays are broken, he drops in the sit stays and stands in the drop stays

though the idea of competing is a little way off with only a thought of competeing in a trial by the end

We are lucky a lot of the clubs here will send out full catalogues in advance of trials (both agility and obedience  ).

I tend to get there reasonably early because most of our grounds have limited parking close to the rings and I like to leave my girls in the car mostly and only crate a dog or two before we go in the ring. Well my older one. My younger one I will probably crate from when we get there when we start trialling because she settles in a crate.

Maybe if we all get together and blend our dogs we could get one that does everything right :cheer::)

Depends on where we are - if the car is close she's there. If its a hike then out comes the crate and she is in that apart from lap cuddle time (she is a bit of a sook).

get her out and start to warm up when the dog before is in the ring. I'm lucky I can toilet her on verbal cue which we always do on the way to the ring before getting the focus..

Then its in the lap of the gods

 A verbal toilet cue is worth its weight in gold - for all those thinking of trialling - this is something to add to your training plan

I'm probably going to have a problem with this when we start trialling. We do have a verbal toilet cue, but it doesn't stop her squatting randomly in the middle of exercises :cheer:

You just gotta try and empty the tank :cheer:
