FranVT
Guys I'd love some homework! But I don't have a video camera nor a tripod, I only have the video capacity on my dSLR. I'll try though! And I will go look at tripods online. So far in class we've covered: Heel Sit (Luuka now does this with no verbal command 100% of the time so far) Left Turn Right Turn Right About Turn Left About Turn* Stand Stay (on lead, standing only in front or 2 feet in front of dog) So I'll just continue to practice that stuff, stand is still a bit shaky and same with stay. *This reminded me, Nik in one of your formal obedience vids you just pivoted and Jedi just sort of pivoted too, we have been taught to bring the dog around behind us, is one more generally accepted or can you do either? The Spotted Devil
Just wondering if there are any exercises for working on lateral flexion? Not necessarily hind end awareness. Cheers
J...
This is one I do with Darcy before agility, just to loosen her back up. Grab a treat and hold it next to the tail head, you might need to hold it away from the body a bit more, depending on how flexible your dog is. I use a piece of cooked steak and let her nibble on it so she holds it for 10 seconds or so and then give it to her. I give her a treat out in front and make her stretch for it as well to make sure she's straight again and then go to the other side and repeat. I only do this once she's had a run and a bit of a warm-up, and it's up to her how far she stretches at all times. Also a good way of finding out if she's a bit sore or not, as she'll be uneven in her ability to stretch one way. Edited July 29, 2010 by Jess. The Spotted Devil
Thanks Jess....I'll try that today. Happy to take any other suggestions on board.
huski
Fran - there are two kinds of LATs that you can do - the round the back one or the one Nik and I do (and most others on this thread I think) where the dog turns with you. I prefer it to the around the back turn because the dog is staying with you and IMO when it's done properly it looks nicer. That is the benefit of doing back end awareness training stuff like the elephant trick I mentioned a few posts ago. Totally up to you as to which one you use as both are ok to use in the ring. I film all my stuff on my little point and shoot so I'm sure your DSLR will be fine!
Mas1981
Huski, can you give me some rear end awareness exercises pls?? I somehow have missed your post on it and its something that i would like to work on more. I do one where Mason has his front feet on the Wii Balance board ( never use the thing anymore so I thought I would use it for him in training) if i move toward him then he moves with his back feet but its pretty sloppy at this stage still. JulesP
What is it with border collies and standing! Everyone of mine has acted like I am trying to kill them whilst luring into a stand! And they just don't appear to 'get it' for ages.
FranVT
Luuka doesn't like to stand either. That'd be bloody right too, because Atlas (aka the hardest bull terrier to train in history (slight exaggeration maybe)) LOVED to stand but hated to sit. His stands were awesome. RallyValley
I love this clip on rear end awareness - almost makes me want a Corgi Hey Tiggy did you hear anything back about Rally tonight? On Monday I swear Vicki and Cindy said it was on, but I haven't heard anything else. Not sure if I will come either way though because I am resting Toby. No I haven't heard anything so I'm assuming it's not on. I probably won't go tonight either - could be too wet - I'm still deciding .
kathq
Had a great training session after work yesterday.. Full run through no hiccups so decided to give the madam a big free run/walk around the big paddock where we went to train. Its surrounded by bush and huge so thought wouldnt hurt. Did not take into account the fact that I was training a half hour later than normal and by now it was close on dark did I? Out of the bush the local roos appear to have their dinner on the nice grass. Coco took one look and was away. Without thinking I just bellowed her name and come. Thanking all the gods of obedience right now as she actually stopped. looked and came. If she had got into that bush after the roos I would never have found her again. Not sure whether to feel ten feet tall with pride or eternally grateful. Never had to do a recall with that kind of distraction/need before. RubyStar
Good girl, Coco!! I think they sense the urgency of our recall sometimes and know we aren't kidding I've had a few of those moments But it reminds me I need to train a better every day recall. They are quite good, but not 100%
