So what are everybody's thoughts on entering obedience at a Royal Show - would you or wouldn't you  and why

Undecided. Scared of the distractions for the dog, scared of the people watching for me!

As I've never been before, can someone please tell me how close the ring is to where we have to keep our dogs? Because if I go, I will probably take Millie but she is the barker.

I did think about taking Beans to Brisbane - but she has done it before and travelling with Beans isn't easy due to her dietary requirements. Then I thought about taking Cider - I could teach her to swim and it would be a chance to see how she would cope with flying with a view to the Nationals next year  Then it did cross my mind to take Strauss - but he is probably best left at home and then of course there is Scoota who fits in really well, knows the ropes and would love every minute of it.

As for jackets/coats when trialling. I have done it before and often put them on for stays. My kids wear jarmies in the winter so they are used to wearing them.

Reading stories from those who have competed at the Royal, it puts me off more and more! Leftover food on the ground is the biggest  factor for me. That and being cramped in small areas and waiting alllll daaaaaaay to go on (because Millie and I would be close to last depending on if she's still doing CCD or CD). I do like a challenge but this is one challenge that doesn't seem to be up my alley just yet ;)

The Ekka conditions were certainly the toughest we have encounted at a Royal but I wasn't put off and would do it again ;)

Yes but you are a glutton for punishment!

Where is the next Nationals again? Because that is something I wouldn't mind trying in another state.

You can only take 1 kid with you?

I'm not feeling very motivated to train at the moment  . I'm loving our long walks and just enjoying the dogs as great pets. It's too cold to ;) .

Sometimes I wish I was just content in enjoying them as just pets and not worry about training, cos then I'd have no hesistation in looking to expand my fur family  But I'm afraid I'm just far too addicted to this whole training thing, so 3rd dog comes when I'm in a training position to do so

A question for the obedience triallers - coats or no coats in cold weather? What about stays?

Obviously you can't wear coats in agility but in cold weather I always make sure Darcy's rugged before and after a run, and she loves her coat. Her coat is stretchy but easy to move in - just wondering if there is any for and againsts for wearing one/not wearing one? It looks like it's going to be very cold

No coat for me. For one, Ruby finds it horribly uncomfortable because she can't lay down in the one I bought for her ages ago, and secondly, Lab people laugh at you for putting a coat on a dog who has their own built in coat!

Cool coats however are on my shopping list as my girls feel the heat at trials, but can handle the cold much better.

Brisbane

You should definitely come!! ;) ;)

That I might possibly do IF I have the funds, because I have some friends in Brissy! And then I get to meet the evil beagle :)

But like Ptolomy is trying to decide, WHICH DOG TO BRING?!?!?!?!?!

Indeed ;)

You should come even if you don't bring a poochie :)

Daisy can show everyone what a bloody PITA she is (Ptolomy has already met her, so she already knows   )

If I go, it would be hard NOT to bring a dog and not compete! But I'd be horribly torn about which dog. Ruby is a great travel buddy, very well behaved, but Millie is proving to be a good little worker with her enthusiasm, but a very noisy, psycho one at that!

I think Daisy and Millie are twins!

Thanks for the comments on coats - I take it you need to check with the judge if you only want your dog to wear one for the stays?

I am talking Victoria cold here - low of 2C and a high of 12C, take a few extra degrees off that for wind chill. So people are welcome to laugh at the "Lab" with a coat on. Her comfort is far more important

I'm seriously considering giving up training(well with competition in mind anyway) because I've never had the motivation for it that you guys do and my dogs have a happy life with our long walks and cuddles on the lounge ;) . I do enjoy training but more for the fun of it than training for competition. This week I've started asking the dogs for a hand touch when I recall them when they're having an off lead run it's like tag then off you go again, they love it  .

Jess. as far as I know, down here at least, the dog may be coated for the stays, even if it hasn't been for indicidual exercises. You can't take off/put on a coat during the individual exercises, or between the 2 stays, but down here anyway, the individuals and the groups are considered separate parts. And hey - let them laugh :happydance:
