Mason_Gibbs Posted January 28, 2012 Share Posted January 28, 2012 Thanks Ptolomy... instead of tins I found some plastic toothbrush holders which come apart in the middle so easy to put food in and easy to fade out the food and reward from me. I did look for tins thinking about metal but since Zac is quite happy to pinch my airing metals I'm not overly concerned about that! Gibbs is 6 months old, he knows drop but gets lazy and does a drop where back end goes down first, i have always encouraged the backwards fold drop but he is not keen to do it. Do i withold treats and just domt give him any until he folds? I have been back tl basics and am now luring him backwards. Is this the right thing to do? kathq Posted February 9, 2012 Share Posted February 9, 2012 Home from tracking training. Did a 350meter track with 3 turns, 2 of which were right angles with 3 articles on track and Coco nailed it. Start was a bit distracted but she worked it out and from there on it was like she was on railroad tracks. Such a clever girl!!! Because of the snake worry we are only able to track on ovals and grassy verges, but we are still enjoying it Not up to the distances you are doing yet kathq and so far have only done rounded type bends as corners. We've only been doing proper/sharp turns for a couple of weeks lots of bends first :) we go out early early here cause Joe Blake is always a worry and longest grass was this week up to Cocos belly. I ran one over...not by choice as I had a car tailgating me and the damn snake was across the middle of the road with not much room either side of it! And sounds like your dogs love it as much as mine do. I know they have their place, but I'm almost as paranoid about snakes as I am about ticks - and down here we do have to worry about snakes. It's on the to-do list for "one" day :) Where are you seeing these snakes, bedazzled? I wouldn't be able to identify one to save my life! That is scary about you running over one, after ozjen telling me a story about a snake being flung up into the engine after being driven over, it gives me the willies when I think about it!!! bedazzledx2 Posted February 11, 2012 Share Posted February 11, 2012 Back way home in the hills RubyStar. It was right next to horse paddocks with a couple of pony's who live there. We mainly have dugites up here and they are pretty easy to identify. The good thing about them is that they are inclined to slither away from you and not turn to attack like Tiger snakes do. That story ran through my head at the time and I did check the rear mirror and it was still on the road...phew! I went past the spot the next morning but no snake there. Fingers crossed and touching wood and all that stuff, we have not seen too many over the last 6 months. Something I'd like to try one day I think. :) What's the best way of training a dog to drop straight? Halo tends to stick her bum out and at the moment I'm guiding it in as she drops so that hopefully she'll realise it has to be straight. Surely there's a better way? Also, in a recall, she does her recall and sits automatically, however she's not as close as I want her to be (she probably sits about 50cm from me rather than her nose being close to my knee). Any suggestions on how to get her closer? At the moment I'm luring her closer as I take a step back with one foot, then moving back into position when she gets to where I want her to be. Different dogs have different problems hey? Never had these issues with Akira, but I also never had a dog that wants to work like Hales does!
