I think Candice is referring to the pivot left about turns where you turn into your dog and they don't leave heel position. Millie doesn't know the round the back LAT. I did a mock Rally course with her and had to lure her around my back Neither of my girls do the pivot LAT pretty, but I still prefer it over the round the back one so we'll keep at it. wuffles Posted September 15, 2011 Share Posted September 15, 2011 I am so confused about terminology I would call the around the back turns "pivot turns" and the others "u turns". IMO to do nice u turns your dog needs very nice rear end awareness and a strong heel position, otherwise the round the back turns are better I do u turns which are lovely when my dog is paying attention but if she's lost focus I end up kneeing her in the head Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So please send all the UDX fairies back to WA via Bunbury ;) And this weekend will be the test to see if Soggy's sit stays have been mended Fingers and toes crossed ;) Yes please - send good obedience vibes and the obedience fairies south this weekend. Firstly for us newbies organising our first obedience trial! And secondly for my crazy Siberian, who has 1 pass in CCD, and 2 dismal failures in the ring....and going into the ring again after a 5 month break. I just feel that if i want to do states i will have to do my left about turns this way for now. Falling over my dog or kneeing him in the head is way worse than going a bit wide. Tassie Posted September 15, 2011 Share Posted September 15, 2011 M and G - yep - given the time frame, better to stick with what you're comfortable with. And then polish the u turn down the track so you've got it in your tool kit - and you'll need it for Rally O ;) . Having trained Rory not to go behind me (no blind cross), I then had to train the round the back finish and RAT for Rally. It's still a bit of a work in progress, and I actually only use the U turn in heeling, theough I'll mix and match the finishes. One of the small things to beware of with a dog which does lovely round the back turns, is that if they're a bit out of position forward, they can do a pretty round the back on a 90 degree left turne - or was that just my first obedience boy, Sam - who would do it in signals heeling in UD, much to everyone's amusement. :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

murve Posted September 15, 2011 Share Posted September 15, 2011 I do agree if it is not done properly it looks ugly, in particular when in a trial our About turns, Right ( U turns) about is good, Left abouts Orlando is off with fairies when it come to his rear end , so we do pivots also was known as the military turn funny thing when we do about turns on lead he goes a little wide, Off lead he is like Velcro, go figure, I dont know why he is like that, but I dont care he is really working well now & pulling his act together. Now I'm sure there's a technological solution to that - as you're walking the course, you record the signs onto your ipod - then play it back as you actually do the course. If you are talking about left about turns, you can do either, and I believe you can even mix n match between the two in the one heel routine. I have done that in the past. Neither of my dogs have been taught them, but a couple of times have not been concentrating into a LAT, they have ended up doing a round the back one, thought WT???? and then paid a little more attention just incase there owner has done something strange again! Unfortunately when my Sibes' head isn't in the game it can mean leaving the ring at a dead run , diving through the next ring and having a nervous, embarrassed & distressed owner running through all the rings trying to catch her! Not a good look at an obedience trial. Will give her a decent walk before the trial this time and see if that helps! Good luck for you this weekend too.
