wuffles
I lost points for squiffies in all 3 of our Novice trials I had one very slightly crooked front (1 point) with a perfect finish, another crooked front with a nice finish (2 points) and one perfect front and crooked finish (2 points). Needless to say it's something I need to fix before Open Nik, I had the same issue with finishing too far back (she went through a phase of sticking her bum to my leg). I am struggling to get it right but I think we are getting there. I think we were discussing this at Albury, but I am doing flip finishes now and I THINK that will work better for us. Time will tell... Edit: Adding finishes broke our fronts. Her CCD recalls were nearly all full points. Edited September 7, 2011 by wuffles

wuffles
How do you teach the flip finish? There are a few ways (luring is one) but I used rear end awareness training (elephant trick) then faded the platform. Now she understands what heel position is no matter where she is coming from. Whichever way you teach it I think your dog has to understand that his back end can move independently of his front end Edited September 7, 2011 by wuffles
bedazzledx2
Its only a minor so probably one or two points depending on the judge. Don't forget that the recall is made up of lots of parts so when you think you've been deducted lots for one thing it could be small points for multiple bits. Example.. the heel up, the sit, the actual recall, your hands feet etc, the front and the finish!!! Lots really ;) Work on each bit separately and you'll do fine :D Hi all, just wanted to know, if my boy sits a bit skew after the finish in Novice what will I be penalised, its not very very skew but not as straight as I would like it, Im still working in this
bedazzledx2
Some puppies are able to process puppy pushups really early and then there are the others....Zac??? So long as you don't put any pressure on the behaviour I reckon you can train it at any time. Love your new sig Mason :D

Mason_Gibbs
I tried flip finished but OMG Mason is so useless at it!! His rear end awareness is just not good enough, I have trained it heaps but I am obviously not doing it right as he does not get it. He is beter since he saw the chiro but not 100%. I want to start rear end awareness earlier with Gibbs than what I did with Mason as I think i missed the boat with him
suziwong66
Also is it too early to be teaching an 8,5 week old pup to drop?? I think Mason was a bit older when I taught him. I am battling to get Gibbs to drop though, he does not lay down if i lure him with the food between his front legs like I learnt to do at dog dlub with Mas. it took Wilbur a little time to finally drop with a food lure. I tried as soon as he came home but it wasn't til late in his 9th week, early 10th week that he started to really come into his own and offer behaviours. Clicker training was also another thing i tried when he came home then stopped til 10 weeks when he was more settled. Looking back, i think Wilbur needed the first two weeks to settle into his new home. When i reintroduced clicker training at 10 weeks he took to it like a duck to water. I don't think 8.5 weeks is too early but if the pup isn't catching on i'd shelve it and try again in a week.
Mason_Gibbs
Gibbs has caught onto the clicker straight away so I am quite happy about that as I use it with Mason

OSoSwift
Lewis had the same issue, we got there using "steady feet"
RallyValley
If Toby has any issue with the examination it will be more likely that he is scared of the person touching him. The issue I am having is getting the stand command, he seems to think we are playing hand touches if I lure it and when I tried to teach him using kick back stands he had a melt down (he is a bit sensitive about personal space . I have also tried pure shaping but he does not understand what I am clicking him for and starts thinking it is really obscure things... He undertands steady feet and is pretty good that if I tell him to stay when he is standing he won't move a foot.... it's just getting that stand on cue! ness
Toby sounds like Kenz RV. Stand was something she just didn't comprehend - we had remedial stand lessons with Sue guru when Kenz was 13 months . Hang in there he will get there and when in doubt book a remedial lesson with the guru. Loved your new little one RV she is going to be a star and she knows it . RallyValley
Yes might book in to see the Guru, I am sure she will whip me into shape for CCD I am just a bit scared that I am going to be told off for doing everything wrong...
Mason_Gibbs
Its a really odd way to teach it but a few people at my club took peanut butter, stuck a blob on the wall and while the dog was standing licking it they clicked and treated ( wouldnt work for Mason as he would just carry on licking the wall/fridge)

Brennan's Mum
Its a really odd way to teach it but a few people at my club took peanut butter, stuck a blob on the wall and while the dog was standing licking it they clicked and treated ( wouldnt work for Mason as he would just carry on licking the wall/fridge) I am 99% sure Toby would think I was shaping licking walls and start offering that Well, I've just had a fantastic Obedience training session with Brennan. Worked on 'Wait' and 'Here' for gate and crate exit. We worked under threshold in the back yard. Luckily there is a gate going from back yard into the front yard ( which is also gated) so had a safe place to practise. We did a fair few ( more then ten) successful repetitions. I had Brennan sit-told her wait, opened the gate, walked out. Then called her. She was rewarded for coming to me and sitting in front of me. We then took it to the Crate. She is really good at going into her crate- just a simple 'Crate' and she will go in. Shut her in, went away for a while, came back, asked for a sit/ wait, opened the crate, stepped away and called her to me. We then decided to work on some getting into heel position. Took her into the front yard where Myf was watching safe from the verandah. I called her to heel and she came. She's starting to get really tight as in she will sit right by my left leg, can feel her against my leg ( though she is not leaning on my leg) and can put my hand on her head without looking down. Was so so proud of her . I can't believe how well she was doing- it was almost like she was another dog. She knows I am super happy with her too- I can tell in the way she is responding- she was so happy to 'work'..even to the point where I ended the 'game' by letting her go sniff a new scent and she didn't want to leave my side .
