JulesP
I've broken my drop. Think it was the drop to sit for open COP that did it. Someone thinks a hover drop means they can sit back up quicker!

The Spotted Devil
I actually like it when they 'break' as I think it leads to better long term understanding. Very funny wuffles Zig does "it's wet and I'm a Dalmatian" hover drops.
RubyStar
I actually like it when they 'break' as I think it leads to better long term understanding. Hope that proves true! Millie's drop on recall keeps breaking. She did such a LOVELY fast neat DOR last week at training, and some normal recalls, then didn't do any again til last night. Was planning on doing a straight through recall but she dropped on her own. I don't do very many DOR's at all and when I do, I always do normal ones as well so it keeps her guessing. So back to little recalls again!
wuffles
When is your next trial murve? My training goals for the next few weeks are... Be more mindful of my body language on heelwork positions. Need to stay still and stand upright to stop Little Miss Anticipation's hoverdrops Get a STRAIGHT finish. My fault as I haven't trained them much... can't afford to lose points for this in trials! Heel position basics Static heelwork positioning is nice in circles, but coming in from different angles she is lacking understanding. Not sure how I'm going to tackle this yet apart from doing more rear end awareness work and trying some of Kamal's exercises. Once I have this I want to make my LATs tighter Start training out of sight stays somewhere other than in the house... with one Novice pass already, Open is creeping up on us rather quickly... Now just to find the time to do all this (at least I can do most of them in the lounge room ) tawer Just a quick update from me, all my training from the list above has been going great! Haven't managed to get out to train (weather is feral) but the lounge room is fine for teaching positioning. I have actually found that taking the time to do lounge room training has not only really strengthened the dog's understanding of the exercises, it's forced me to think about what I'm doing and fix some of the niggly issues I've been having. We managed to build a nice "come to heel" from any position and this also means we are finally doing straight flip finishes, woohoo! I have also always been stumped on side steps but she will do that too now, so I am super happy :D :D Not sure how our next trial will go as I need to find some time to go out and work on some duration heeling but I will be very happy if her positioning accuracy carries across on the day. aussielover
We had our first obedience training session last night. It was actually really good, run by the same club as our agility classes, so they knew us and we didn't have to start in beginners (which is horrifically boring) thank god. How do you get good focus during a heel (ie dog looking at you)? My dog has been trained to look ahead not at me. She did really well last night, focussing on me 50% of the time but I think she was kind of unsure as she kept looking at me and then looking ahead and then back at me. I marked and rewarded her looking at me. Is it just a matter of practicing in really short bursts and building up from there? Any other suggestions on how I can retrain her heel? The Spotted Devil
Heel work should be trained in short bursts and by making it fun - which also means rewarding every step when you are beginning and breaking everything down to it's parts and practicing them separately....turns, duration, circle work, change of pace etc. Em trains in obedience, retrieving and (soon) agility......for heeling and other obedience drills my body language (mainly) cues her to look up at me as that's how the rewards flow. In retrieving she heels to the starting point, command is 'watch' or 'blind' depending on the retrieve and she looks straight ahead - note that's also where the reward comes from. Zig does obedience and agility.....I worked on the former heavily first so it took some time for him to learn to look forward for agility and use more of his peripheral vision but lots of one jump work helped. I actually heel him to the start line to maintain his focus and he makes the switch well. Edited July 6, 2011 by The Spotted Devil
ness
Well I tried the sit box idea and so much for Kenz deciding to offer the elephant trick NOW all she offers is a sit on whatever I put out . Well no she starts off with the elephant/phone book trick but now at the end product is her sitting on the phone book. Hmmm guess whats flavor of the month. Ptolomy
Well the sit mat helped Strauss get his around the back finishes - they were really good tonight I am off to buy a few for others. At $2 a mat from Clarke Rubber - its money well spent. Anyway - tonight I brought out the toy box and emptied probably 25 toys/leads and bits and pieces around the area we were working. This is the first time Strauss has played this game and within 30 seconds he worked out that all the treats came from me and the more he ignored what was on the ground, the more rewards he got. I was getting some lovely work from him Cider - well she did this a long time ago - so we were playing open exercises in amongst the toys, db, DOR etc and was rewarding with food and her i-squeak. In the past when I have brought the i-squeak out she has refused to play db, but not tonight. Scoota - for the first time I did some UDX distraction work. Now he is funy to watch when I bring the toys out because he goes into overdrive and refuses to look at anything but me. Its was a fantastic session which we all enjoyed

RubyStar
Well I had fun raiding IGA tonight for all their markdowns! Got two packs of 4 Legs at $2 off each. Use by date is today but they go straight in the freezer anyway! But my major score were 6 pack of Petit Miam's for $1.15 each, usually $4.15 So I grabbed the last 9 on the shelf! So I have 54 little yoghurt jackpots ready and waiting Use by date is today but again, straight in the freezer and remove as needed! Bought myself 4 yoghurts at 31c each, apple crumble flavour I think I might jackpot myself with 1 or 2 of them tonight for dessert for a shopping trip well done Edited July 6, 2011 by RubyStar

Tassie
Ptolomy, did you get any video of how you used the sit mat with the RTB finishes with Strauss? Sounds like you had a great session with the red kids. Must have been the night for distraction proofing - too cold to get the bike out, so I did a bit of obedience with Rory (it's been neglected lately), and we were doing a bit of heeling through a selection of dbs and some little plasstic zippy bags with treats. Still needs work, but soming on (and he loves his db). Also did a sit stay with both of them, with clear plastic treat bags about half a metre in front - one each. Rory is usually pretty good about that, but it was a BIG ask for my little food-thieving demon bitch, who can rip one of those bags apart in a heartbeat - but she managed it - good girlie. RS, I'd say you earned your jackpots :D .
Ptolomy
Nah sorry didn't get the mat thing on video and it is probably too late now as he knows the game and I have already faded it. Maybe Bedazzled can get a video of Zac?? Duration work is next on Strauss's agenda starting tonight ;) Food thieving Demon Bitch - hmm I've got a couple of those! RubyStar
Duration work is next on Strauss's agenda starting tonight ;) Are you heading down to the K9 tonight? Hoping I can pinch you at some stage to call me some rounds with Ruby pretty please. I think we really need rounds called, so she relates someone calling a round to still being rewarded (and so I can settle my nerves). And well done Strauss!!
