Training Talk Thread

Coco has been horrible all weekend with her scent work, this morning despite scenting the track she ran right over the article in SB but ignored it. Started to hunt further afield (out of the ring where I warmed up) so I called her off again. Brought back wrong articles in SD which she hasnt done in 12 months so withdrew. Her other work was fine.

My question to the gurus Is it possible that the antibiotics I have been on for three days now have changed my scent enough to cause this issue with her?

Remembering this is the dog who refused to work for me the first (and only time) I trained with my glasses on, in fact she went and sucked up to my friend who was calling the ring runout. Took the glasses off and she worked as per normal.

I asked Bedazzled a little while ago if she knew how you got on today.....

Yes antibiotics definitely affect your scent work - take it from me .... been there, done that and failed scent!

Thanks for that she was just so out of character this weekend with her SB, was starting to think I had broken her somehow. Decided to cut our losses and have an early day. Came home, played with the dog for a while and the strapper/chauffeur extroidanaire took me out to lunch. Told you he was worth his weight. It was his suggestion about the A/Bs.

Thanks everyone!

LOL Murve, I am just lucky she is only a little girl....I would have been stuffed if she was Lab sized!

Yes you are lucky she is little, try doing it with a 60 kg Rottie, I have, he only did it once after he put me on my rear ended me, he was more carefull not to knock me for a sixa

A friend of mine recently had her GSD running at the beach and she leapt and slammed into her back putting her face first onto a firm beach. Ended up with a broken shoulder and the ball of the shoulder ina round 6 pieces and looking like a full shoulder replacement. - Very OUCH!

I will have the video's from yesterday's trial (Hastings) in the next hour or so

Oh just been told we are entering Geelong Obedience double trial on the 9th July, here we go out of bed at 5am, leave by 6am

At training this morning everybody asked how we went, told them of coarse, well while in class Orlando & I was drilled to the hilt  but it was good, I am finding the more we are drilled the better we both are, now the OH has got in on the act, Oh christ I think I created a monster he wants it all perfected

hahahaha Murve-talk about pressure.

I would be chuffed if my OH showed an interest. But I am not sure I would like him to be THAT interested!

 oh well I think it is good I will get drilled more than Orlando, once we get our footwork pace down pat everything else will fall into place, I dont seam to keep the same pace all the way through heelwork & thats what he wants to really work on at this point

I recorded a metronome onto my mobile phone to keep my pace at a steady pace-nothing else worked!

Hopefully this isn't too off topic....

I am looking at getting a second dog to go with my 5 yo Siberian Husky and am currently tossing up between a Norwegian Elkhound and an Australian Shepherd. I love the spitz breeds but also want to compete in obedience and agility in the future and am having trouble deciding which way to jump. I was just wondering if anyone has had any dealings with training Elkhounds in obedience / agility / any other dog sports?

I have been told it is open to all trialers & newbies, found out last night there will be dog/handler demonstrating each class with Ross, I was asked to do CCD with Orlando, only the demo dogs are to be there :) light supper after talk

Yes Ross Carlson is both Judge & trialer/trainer
