Nik Posted June 5, 2011 Share Posted June 5, 2011 Well at the trial yesterday my nerves weren't quite as bad as I thought they would be, except I initially forgot my left from right!! Judge kept talking to me between exercises though- asking me if I kept a training journal and what sort of things we put in it and that didn't help much with focus! Withdraw if I couldn't get them revved up. And smack myself over the head as I would need to do something to flatten them or they would be sick. Normally we don't discover that until we get through seekback and the evil bitch decides presenting in front of me is an optional extra (a trick that is reserved just for trials). If it was Kenz - something is seriously wrong and I would be looking to find out what that thing is. If she is a little flat but not super flat I'll take Ness out in front of her and play with Ness a little and that normally fires Kenz up enough. Even when my girl is flat she works better than a lot of the other dogs and I don't feel ready to deal with the questions/comments and having to wait a month 'til the next trial! I do think that I am learning and gaining confidence with each trial though, so I do hope I get there soon Edit: Sorry, I didn't read the original question properly :p My first trial was a double and Ava had been sick for a week or two prior. I was fully prepared to wake up that morning and pull her out but I got up and she was raring to go. So I did the morning trial (and did very well) but pulled out of the afternoon as I didn't want to push her. It's amazing how many people don't want to trust your judgement about your own dog - I think I had about 5 people exclaim that I shouldn't pull her out (including the judge). huski Posted June 5, 2011 Share Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) If I couldn't rev her up (highly unusual - even if it comes apart once we're in the ring due to my crappy handling etc I have never had any problem getting her revved up before hand), I'd withdraw. Daisy is a dog that must be 'in drive' or there is no point going in the ring, if she isn't revved up and 100% into it then she will scent. I see some dogs that can still go out and get a pass for flat work, but Daisy is not one of them, she must be in drive and focused otherwise we won't make it through an exercise, her scent drive is too strong. She can be working beautifully, but if she cops a whiff of a scent, I have lost her and it is terribly hard to get her back once she starts following her nose along the ground. Don't think I could ever train a Beagle, hats off to you!!! And I know there is a bit more to tracking than just being good at smelling the ground But if I had the time I think Millie would have a great chance at doing well at it, she tracks backwards and forwards when she smells something. ness Posted June 5, 2011 Share Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) ROFL RubyStar you might be surprised re tracking - Ness had one training session and within 5 minutes she was tracking as though she had done it her entire life and at warp speed. But then again in a few years, I hope to have my new dog so even less time for stuff I need to find someone who wouldn't mind taking Millie to tracking for me while I concentrate on retrieving with Ruby - any takers? But one thing I noticed is that Ava looks away at the same point on every figure of 8 - coming out of the inside turn I went back and looked at our trial videos and she did it then too No idea how we're going to tackle it yet, but thank God for video! RS I think mine would love tracking as well! Do this 3-4 times and the dog will automatically keep looking at you expecting a treat at the same place - then extend it 2 steps before clicking and bob should be your uncle Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
