Its a work in progress but I am pleased with how it is going considering at one stage he was going to be a stud/show dog only. He is looking good, though I've always been a little partial towards him Can't believe he is 12 months already though! Where has that time gone? ness Posted May 12, 2011 Share Posted May 12, 2011 (edited) So ok guys - not strictly training but since my midget trialling dog is on at least a minimum of 4 weeks and possibly 8 weeks "rest" for a shoulder ligament injury anybody got any suggestions on keeping her amused when she isn't suppose to be doing much if anything. So far tonight we have worked on stationary heel position . And she has now learned that "head" means get your head off the position where you would desperately like it to be wrapped across my leg and please assume a position which won't get you pinged in the ring . Apparently there are something like 16 different heel positions around your body, you could try teach a few of those. Of what about some silly tricks like wave, shake hands, count, cover nose, high 5. Or some super awesome rear end stuff like teach the dog to isolate an individual foot and target something with it. Was off looking through blogs to find an example of targeting heelwork for the other thread and came up with the idea of teaching her names of toys - least it should be something she can do relatively still without moving to much. BUT his front's look closer on video then they seem in real life so I might have my strandards too high (the times he does come to front ) and his rear end awareness stuff is looking ok. ETA - has my embarrasing music in the background, camera people in my family tend to want to do commentary too! If you want to try and encourage closer fronts have you tried tossing the treat and having him run between your legs. Ness went through a stage of fronting out a little closer then I would have liked so I went to throwing the treat between my legs. His rear end awareness stuff looks good I thought - well done. When you send him around to heel you move your entire body firstly to the right and then you turn the other way to watch him to line up. Try and keep your body facing frontwards and just use your hand to send him around rather than your hand, arm, shoulders and head :-). Also would like to see video of some more fronts. She did her first formal retrieve on tuesday-all be it in the garden and only 1 meter away. OK gurus - need to do some serious work on proofing Rory's stays against other dogs. All I can think of is grabbing any opportunity I can, and just starting off very small - on lead and close, and trying to build up. I'm thinking I should be getting him to focus on me - yes? or no? Did a session a little earlier and did only hand actions and verbals for the finishes, no moving my body and I am pleased to report not only did he do what I asked but he also did it better and quicker then when I 'lure' him, which watching back on the video is basically what I was doing Thanks Ptolomy! Caffy took your advice on board and had a chance to use it this morning, he did a way crooked front (halfway between heel position and front) so I just said 'Oops' ran back and called him to front again, he got it straight so jackpot! That's what you meant right? Tassie James is normally too busy off sniffing to come 'help' but just happened to walk in as we were filming. The other day though I was doing phonebook work with Toby and every time I clicked Toby I gave James a treat too, even though he didn't always want to eat them Sue&Cindy yay for you guys and the dumbell! I've just started training a formal retrieve, am shaping a nice calm hold at the moment. Hard and boring work since I hate shaping.
