Today Tollersowned and I met up to do some NRA training.

I wanted to fix Geordie's breaking when the bumper is thrown, which happens about 70% of the time.

I fixed it SO GOOD that he was holding position and when I released him he wouldn't go fetch. Bloody Tollers!!

LOL I have done this too with the dumbbell. Don't fall into the trap of giving a second signal to fetch! You need to break it off line them up again and give the release command again. Bloody tollers way too smart for me!

Ok ta, we will try that next week. I was shaking my head driving home, thinking "well why would I expect it just to go to plan- duh!". ;)

At any level is the handler required to go around the dog after the dog has recalled? I checked the rules but I thought it was in there I just can't find it.

Reason is at training I got told I had to train her to wait while I go around, personally I don't see the need when she can go to the heel position and I don't want to confuse her, unless it's actually a requirement in trials.

Thats the old rules for CCD which no longer apply.

Ahh makes sense, thought I read it somewhere!

Do you bother training it then? Or can I just say I don't want to confuse her when they try to make me do it at training?

Is it very naughty to giggle whilst shaping? I'm doing some perch work with Em (front paws on the phone book) and she's started doing really fast 360 spins with her hind legs and sometimes falling off the phone book. It was so funny and the more I laughed the faster she spun

ETA: TO, I do it anyway as Zig loves to anticipate. I always train the finish separately.

I have a question for all of you gurus out there. Gabby does her articles brilliantly in training will fly out for her articles but is worried in a trial situation. She doesnt seem to do it very quick at all and I do find I cant get her engaging to me usually she does hand touches and jumps all over me and does playful noises but soon we are in the trial she just loses it. For example saturday night she flew out and got the correct one came towards me and than put it down checked out the others came back to the correct one and than walked in. Second one still like that picked up the correct one put it down and than picked it up and the third one happy. Other times quite happy. I know it's a confident thing in the ring and is unsure but it sure is a hard one to fix when its only in the ring. Has anybody got any ideas.

I still would. You have to return to the dog behind them after stays, SFE, COP. But like with the finish, I'd start teaching the return as a separate exercise to anything.

For my SD, I have been using a tug and then getting Snazz to jump onto his contact, releasing and tugging and then sending to find a SD article and then another big play with the tug. Creates a lot of drive for the articles. I’m not worried about formal fronts and finishes …I do those separate.

You just find something she is crazy for and keep the exercise informal…do 1 article or do 2…just mix it up and keep doing everything fast and fun.

xena98 - I'm definitely not the guru you've been looking for, but if it's only happening in a trial situation could it be the build up by the time you get to articles? Would you consider doing the seek back in a trial (I can't remember if there's anything after that???) and then leaving the ring for a jackpot?

we have the sendaways she loves those and she jumps around for joy. So the seekback she jumps around like a mad thing sendaways and silent signals just the articles. In training she goes absolutely crazy. Just in a trial we worry dont know why though

Nope dont do the mat for a few reason when I start training I do and that is cause its my own and than transfer to the grass. First reason I dont like the mat the metal keeps on rolling everywhere and goes together and some of the trialing mats I have seen used had been moldy and smelly so I havent used them for years

Normally fine gets 28-30 for heelwork and jumps around as a loony bin before the heeling and after the heeling. Her tail is wagging and she is prancing along. Thats the funny bit I just cant get her doing hand touches jumping around nothing its just like she is serious but in training she is a lunatic and she flys out there isnt a thing wrong runs quickly back. Saturday night she wasnt happy in the heelwork but that was the first time she had done that. I dont have an obedience trial for awhile now its all agility at the moment.

I get what you mean, but what I meant was is it necessary for me to train her to stay while I walk around her when she has recalled like they do in obedience classes? She knows to stay while I walk around for stays, sfe and cop but if it's not a requirement for me to walk around her after she has recalled then I am not going to add something that is unnecessary. I did try it once but she was clearly confused and wondering where I was going so got up to follow me as I am apparantly not meant to move when she comes to me regardless of what I tell her :) Bloody Tollers and their ideas of what is wanted :p
