Sue & Waldo
We did some work on our retrieves tonight! I am very pleased with how Daisy is coming along. I was having trouble with her scenting the ground and not seeing the dumbell, I got one with painted on sides yesterday and WOW - INSTANT difference. She did the speediest retrieves very consistently tonight. You can see she is so much more confident because she doesn't need to look around for the dumbell anymore. I wasn't asking for a complete exercise as I wanted to work on building her confidence in retrieving it nicely now she can see it better, without worrying about finishes etc. Just in case anyone is wondering she can hold it for longer and I realise I was snatching it from her  ETA: And excuse the missing bit at the beginning, I cut out me throwing it as Daisy pre-empted my command and I had to set her up again. But I couldn't be bothered going out to pick the dumbell up you should be very proud of her work-well done

bedazzledx2
I've uploaded video of Ptolomy's Cider in CCD at the Perth Royal. I had to do it in three vids as I had problems with the movie making program. But wow what a short heel pattern in comparison to what our QLD judges give us! We get all 3 positions in all 3 paces! It's not fair!!
wuffles
WOW! Cider's videos are an inspiration to those of us working towards CCD... amazing work, well done. I don't think I've ever seen such beautiful heelwork Edited September 27, 2010 by wuffles

Ptolomy
Rubystar you should be please with your girls effort and I hope that this wont be the last time you decide to enter. You have to remember that the obedience ring is used to toilet the alpaccas in the afternoon/evening and with the crowd sitting on the ring rope it is a tough assignment. Hopefully the girls will find the States at K9 in 2 weeks time a much easier outing. Next year we need to do some training in a cow paddock and at a shopping centre to proof for distractions **** It was lovely to see so many WA DOL people watching the obedience and giving support - all that was missing was the chocolate chip cookies and the rocky road ***

She started of so, so well (well, after we FINALLY left the start peg that is! ) and I don't blame her at all for her "stagefright". She saw those people and had a mini meltdown Maybe by next year she will be ready for such distraction. Ruby, well, I don't blame the Royal for her work. I need a brand new game plan with her or I might be withdrawing her for a little while to focus on Millie. I just can't cope with being frustrated with Ruby anymore, it isn't worth the stress it puts me under ;) Next time you train in a cow paddock, text me! I need to do some serious distraction work with miss moo though. She has so much potential and I don't want it to go to waste! P.S. Sue & Waldo
I have a problem with the heel up for the recall in ccd. It was not broken until yesterday. I think Cindy is thinking it is a sit stay. I have checked my footwork this morning and the person observing did not notice anything. I clearly say heel. I think Cindy is thinking: lead off=stay Any clues would be gratefully received. Anyone? Problem solved-it is only broken in the ring not when training It wouldn't be handler nerves would it??? Somebody here with a sheltie had the same problem. Dog thought that he was being left on a sit stay and she blew 3 trials as he didn't come on the first call. I think she ended up exaggerating her next trial call signal and it broke the run of ducks. I had a similar issue with both Cider doing a recall and Scoota doing Dog in the box. I would reward the wait or the sit in the box and then when I gave the next signal they would look at me as if to say ....no way am I going to move you just rewarded me for staying. Both dogs are very literal. I fixed it by playing get it games and rewarding them for chasing food and balls.

ness
Hmmmm can I put up my hand to be Vice President of the Cider fan club if RubyStar is the President. A Cider fan club Plenty I'm sure, but I don't know what, that is my problem The problems I had with my 2 (to me) were 2 different problems. One was a Royal/inexperience in highly distracting environments problem (Millie), the other is a dog who chooses not to perform to her ability when we step into any ring regardless of distractions (Ruby), and I know I am half to blame, if not more than half. I'm going to have to put myself in mindset of "dog knows nothing, go back to basics" with R but that is so hard to do when you know (think!) they know more! bedazzledx2
I can say that when I'm judging my criteria for heelwork is graduated from fairly simple in CCD to harder in Novice. Open (and eventually UD when I go for that) is much tougher. I don't think you need to kill it in the lower classes so long as the dog shows it can do fast normal and slow and every position. The Royal round is fairly typical duration with some variations of course between judges. Mind you, if your QLD dogs can perform the every position in every pace type heelwork then they will be well prepared for the tougher stuff later on. Different thoughts on that...you should see the UK and US starter patterns....much smaller rings and much much much less heelwork with a couple of positions and in the US the figure 8 is a separate exercise. I quite like that for the lower classes actually. But wow what a short heel pattern in comparison to what our QLD judges give us! We get all 3 positions in all 3 paces! It's not fair!!
