Depends on the exercise and where the judge is likely to send me. If for example, the seekback pattern is going past the jump then I will set up on the other side of the start peg to give me a nice straight line rather than deviating slightly as can happen. If in Open we have an Eastern States judge who likes to have you start the retrieve on the flat from the start post, I'll choose whichever side gives me the middle of the ring and is not too close to either the broad or the high jump. Generally I will set up with my dog closest to the start post though...just habit I guess. I think way back when, I was advised to do this as it gives a small barrier for the dog.

I thought I would post this as I was thinking through it tonight. My question is when you set your dog up at the start post in the ring or at training do you stand next to the peg with the dog on the other side or do you set yourself up with the dog next to the post. With Ness I always set her up next to the post mostly to keep her in straight and finds she sets up straighter that way. I am yet to decide what i will do with Kenz and thought I might find out what other people do and the reason for it.

I mostly like to set up with the gilrs between me and the post though it depends on what the exercise is and how the judge is working their ring. That straight line thing is important to us as we need alll the help we can get.

Many moons ago when I had a boy dog and was trialling it was suggested I always stand between him and the post to cut down on any opportunity for him to lift his leg. This was in the lower classes only back then not sure if it worked or not as I alwys made sure to toilet well before going in the ring anyway.

I am usually next to the post but have straightness issues so maybe should try it the other way. I heeled off the other day and Poppy went wide, the judge/teacher thought that she was actually going in a straight line and I had gone crooked! Damn border collies, always know best! :happydance2:

Jedi and I were supposed to trial today... But yesterday at the interclub challenge he was scratching at the start peg  and then decided to roll in the grass :happydance2: and then to top it off he was vomiting all night. Needless to say we had a lovely sleep in and he's feeling much better now!

I finally got motivated to start teaching Mack stuff today so we started teaching him how to fetch with his tug toy as a reward when he brought it back. He clued on pretty quickly. I might start playing with the find it game tomorrow. I've been pretty slack with his training considering I've had him for 5 weeks now! :happydance2:

Don't feel too bad I did the 'find it' game with my two for the first time yesterday and they're 3 and 4 years old :happydance2:

Today I met my new little man Strauss for the first time. I took a bag of toys and a plastic container, that I usually use for jackpots for the other kids with goat in it.

We went into Strauss's kennel, put the bag with everying in it on his bed and before I knew it he was rummaging in the bag and pulled out the container with goat in it and started carrying it around his kennel.

This was his first taste of raw meat :)

I can't believe how confident this puppy is - its scary!!!

 He might just go missing. The end bit where he stares at the camera just melts my heart!

x2  Looks like you'll have fun with him, Ptolomy - if he hasn't been spoilt rotten by then :)

:):) At class on Sunday I got 4 minutes of focused heeling form Cindy with no treats and a loose Dane running through the class :laugh:

I could hardly believe it! Boy did she get praise and jackpots after that effort! She even dropped in the mud.:rofl:

Thanks-I am still thrilled. It is great to see some results after a plateau!

Did a bit of training at the park yesterday after the obedience trial. Had the video camera in the car from the trial so thought I may as well whip it out and film some training

Ruby duration heelwork:

Millie kinda sorta but not completely duration heelwork:

Constructive criticism is always welcome. We've come so far in a year, couldn't imagine getting that much heelwork without breaking focus a year ago, but if I can double that, awesome :( I haven't ever pushed Ruby much past the minute mark... I guess now that I can see she can, I should push for more. I think she's up for the challenge :) But I had no idea how long we had been going for until I watched it back and took a look at the counter :o

And yes, that is Millie going off her rocker in the car in the background of Ruby's video :( I'm using the clicker in Millie's video as I'm trying to mark when she's closer to my leg. She tends to drift further away so working on fixing that

RS do you have a video of Millie's trial??

Sorry Mas, only got like the last third of Millie's trial on video, so there's hardly anything worth watching. There's basically only the SFE and recall and the recall you can't see a lot because the judge was in front of the camera. Very  at my parents. Dad has been dying to come and see "his" Millie in the ring, so had planned to come along with Mum who I had already advised long ago I wanted her to come down so she could film it. Dad was farting around as per usual which made them late, so I had to find a videographer at the last minute and they probably got confused with the filming as they hit pause right after they hit record and didn't realise until heelwork was over  I think I need to hire a permanent video person as I can't find good help these days! The best video people I've had are busy in the ring themselves :D

Yay Millie video  . I love her attitude and there was a beautiful LAT in there.

Ruby looks awesome.

Your handling is awesome to  .

Thanks Tiggy :) Yes for fast pace, that LAT I was pretty happy with! Turns in general need perfecting, my footwork is all over the place and some more rear end awareness needs to happen.

Milliemoo was noooooooooorty last night at training!!!! While Ruby was my angel. Millie had a couple of chances, blew each of them, so I put her back in the car and that was that :D But managed some lovely heelwork before she blew me off  Dogs, eh! Who'd have 'em! ;)

On the train on my way home from work to take Lincoln out for his last walk with me before he flies out.

On a more training related note Eden Hill has thier first rally class Thursday and me and Toby will be going! So excited to get Toby into obidience, might make him appreciate agility more (ducks for cover since I know this is the obidience thread)
