Was training the kick back stand today which I've not worked on much but the dogs did well it was the sit that was the problem. Through handler error :) the dogs are sitting on an angle towards me because I always reward from my left hand so they're gravitating towards the reward. I have to make an effort of varying reward placement and only rewarding good sits. Anyone else had this problem or just me with my lazy handling  .

Has anyone got any suggestions on fixing a crooked stand?

At my last obedience trial one of the judges suggested I not twist my body when I give Darcy a stand command as it's what makes her stand crooked for SFE and COP. I've always used my right hand to give the stand command, which exagerated slightly gives the body twist.

I've been experimenting with a left handed stand command and Darcy has picked it up very quickly, but it hasn't fixed it at all. In fact it seems she's developed a habit of stepping into me with her butt in a stand :)

Any ideas on how to fix this? She got 38/40 for heeling so most of our lost points for that trial come from the crooked stands.

If you are using your left hand to give the stand signal - try giving it a little further away from your body and see if this helps.

Today I met my new little man Strauss for the first time. I took a bag of toys and a plastic container, that I usually use for jackpots for the other kids with goat in it.

We went into Strauss's kennel, put the bag with everying in it on his bed and before I knew it he was rummaging in the bag and pulled out the container with goat in it and started carrying it around his kennel.

This was his first taste of raw meat :)

I can't believe how confident this puppy is - its scary!!!

From what I am told he has all the girls working at Quarantine wrapped around his little paw - and from what I can work out he is being spoilt rotten :)

Gorgeous pup Ptolomy  Must be hard to have to wait so long but I'm sure he will be worth it

I have to stop with the drooling over puppies though - Zee is 13 months old tomorrow and I want another one already.... :)

I thought I would post this as I was thinking through it tonight. My question is when you set your dog up at the start post in the ring or at training do you stand next to the peg with the dog on the other side or do you set yourself up with the dog next to the post. With Ness I always set her up next to the post mostly to keep her in straight and finds she sets up straighter that way. I am yet to decide what i will do with Kenz and thought I might find out what other people do and the reason for it.

I set Ruby up in between me and the start post, to try and eliminate her jumping on the judge  (here in WA they are mostly posts about waist height for the start peg). The jumping is not such an issue now, but that was the reason why I started it. Now, it's just habit. As for Millie, she gets set up in the same spot but that is also due to habit. Just doesn't feel right me standing next to the start post!

Edit: another reason I guess I keep it that way is so the dog sees the post and I can help establish a routine for the start peg. In training, I will often stand there and click/treat for attention. The idea is sitting next to the post is the cue to the dog to look at me and be ready to go. Which certainly isn't foolproof obviously, especially if I was to trial interstate where the start post is not the same!
