Mrs Rusty Bucket
ValleyCBR In my club, you're supposed to get grade 5 obedience before you can start agility training. ie dog must have a good "stay/wait" and a good recall or it's going to nick off in agility. So Ness, Rivsky and myself all do obedience and agility. But I don't compete yet. Might never compete in obedience. We've got "stay" but not in one position at the moment. We tend to lie down part way through. And I'm not sure she'd willingly do a whole obedience routine without a dripfeed of treats the whole way round. She will do the agility run without a treat till the end.

He will walk on a loose lead and is trialling in agility, the big change is teaching him the left side magnet, the strict heeling, the SFE ect. He is obidient (mostly) but not training in obidience (like CCD/CD type) if that makes sense.

Ptolomy
Caffy's dog Snazzy is probably the best example I can think of of a top notch agility dog turning his hand (very successfully I might add) to obedience :p

Seita
Finally our articles are back on track!!! We finally progressed to a whole set again this afternoon with no uncertainty to be seen! Both the wood and metal articles were fresh but the leather had been heavily scented as we'd done a session with just leathers earlier. I'll take her out to club tonight with a fresh set of articles and see how she goes. I won't add other people's scents back into it just yet though. Hopefully this is the end of our article problems!!

J...
Has anyone trained an agility dog to be an obidience dog? Doing obidience with Toby is something that I think would be interesting but he has never done formal heelwork and is used to aglity training. I know dogs normally go from the other way (obidience to agility) and it is what I will be doing with Lincoln. I find when I do obidience work with Toby it helps with his focus for agility so it would be good to train towards something I guess. I have, kind of. I did your usual run of the mill obedience classes with Darcy because I didn't know any better and she got her CCD at 14 or 15 months just because we could, but she was always an agility dog first and foremost. She's just got her CD title, but she was titled to ADM JDM2 and several other agility titles first. I would've put her in the obedience ring earlier but unfortunately I spent too much time boring the crap out of her in obedience classes and agility was obviously far more fun. Subsequently she would switch off in the obedience practise ring and I gave up on it for quite a while, nearly 3 years. It's only been this year that I've decided to work on it again and have figured out how to make it part of one big game

Good on you guys! We already have direct jumping and signals problems!!! LOL She was dropping in the box up until last night and she still on occaisons takes the wrong jump cos she's not paying attention to me. And she's been missing drops in signals a little bit by not quite going all the way down... and in her last trial she did a perfect signals exercise, she would have been on full marks and then right at the very end she forgot to sit after the finish! Across all 3 of our trials so far she has now managed to 0 in each exercise at least once!
kathq
Noooo Ptolomy it will be the start of the directed jumping problem - you are soooo wrong . And then somewhere while you have the directed jumping problem you will get a seekback problem . Directed Jumping is now becoming a problem here. Thought it was set but now she seems to think the solid jump is the only one out there SIGH. Have watched the video of her at Gympie several times and am wondering if the voice command of "over" which is what I have always used in Open has her fixating on the thing as she seems to change direction when I give my slightly off timed voice command. She is having a few days off this week and will train again this weekend and am thinking of substituting the command "jump" instead. Should I use only bar jumps as well? Or stick with both types and just do multiple repetitions? Any and all suggestions welcomed.

Kathq - when Bedazzled and I have had problems with directed jumping its been because of where the judge has been standing or if the judge moves a hand. So check that isn't the issue before changing anything. The other thing is how you are holding your hands just before you give the direction, if one hand is on top of the other you may be moving it first??? Ptolomy
Kathq and Seita my heart goes out to you as I know how frustrating UD can be. It seems that we all follow a similar path. We believe that our dogs are ready to trial in UD (and I don't doubt that they do know every exercise) and usually the first trial you enter you fail 1 or maybe 2 exercises, but overall its something minor and fixable that causes the fail so you come away really happy with the effort. From there it becomes a procession of having to fix every exercise one by one as they fall to bits and the dog fails things that they have never done in the past. So hang in there we really do understand and you both will come out the other side, much better trainers, having trained all the UD exercies multiple times and repaired many broken bits. Bedazzled and I still shake our heads as one of our boys will make an error, like not sitting in the box, and within a couple of weeks the other one with follow with exactly the same error. Its almost like they have been chatting to each other in the back of the car saying...........what will we do this week!

Tassie
They don;t call it Futility Dog for nothing. And had to laugh at the boys 'copying' each other. When I had my first BC in UD, there was a lovely em Corgi competing at the same time. He and his handler lived up the other end of the state, so we only saw each other at trials. Bt every now and again, the boys would do the same weird thing - "he's never done taht before" - and it can't have been texting - this was in the days before mobile phones - we reckoned it was telepathy. And if it makes people feel any better, the Corgi, who was a beautiful worker, once ended up owing the judge points - had no scores on the board, and then peed in the ring (which was another thing he never did) . My Sam's best effort was to have nothing on the board going into stays - but he did manage those that day. I always reckon UD is character building. Is there any other breed I toyed with the BC idea for a little while, but I just love my aussies too much . Hmm... might even include a trip to WA.... We'll see :D Oh I will act like I got a perfect score if Leo finds his seekback.
RubyStar
Hmmm maybe I will stay in Open for a while, UD sounds scary! Not that I think I will have much choice, as I think having Ruby in Open I will experience similar things to UD in that slowly her exercises will fall apart! I have a feeling Moo will be joining Ruby in Open before Ruby even manages a single pass
