Mason's mum are you using a "stay" command or just a position command? I know with Kenz I have taught her sit means sit until she hears a release command. So I don't actually use a "stay" with her. Drop with mean drop until released. Same for stand.

I just want to have a little comment that diehard obdience/agility people can ignore but after a weekend of asking for mostly sits and rally-o stuff tonight at show training my boy switched into show mode, didn't sit once and stopped into his free stacks! It's amazing to see how they can realise the difference and how versatile they can be.

My turn for a question to spark a bit of discussion - what do people do to make the transition from getting a perfect round at training to getting a nice round at a trial. Do you do anything extra in your training to get ready or do you just enter a trial and hope for the best?

I will add something on what I do sometime tomorrow but am interested in other people's responses.

May sound out there Masons mum but before I leave the girls I pat them on the chest and say sit, then do the normal stay leave your dog. It is the only time I do this signal and it seems to reinforce it for them. We had a small problem with the sit stay and this was suggested to me, go back to baby steps, very short time frame right in front and pat the chest. It worked and touch wood have had no problems since.

Oh yeah try and do stays all the time, different lengths starting with short of course. By all the time I mean not just in a full training session. Do them while you are pegging out the washing, making a cup of coffee, cleaning your teeth. At anytime wherever/whatever you are doing around the house and the dog is with you.

Edit for spelling and last thoughts.

We are basically doing a full run through every other day out of the back yard. It is for us a proofing thing I think - once they are doing it right in the back yard they obviously know the exercise. So I leave all the jumps in the back of the ute, home from work change, throw the dogs in the car and go to one of several parks within a 15 minute drive of us. Do a full run through and then take them home.

Will do a very short light run out the day before a trial more just the scent stuff as that is the thing in my head (not necessarily the dogs) that needs to be done.

We used to just use position commands but then in this class we have been taught to tell them to wait or stay. If I dont say wait he will move when he feels like it. With his SFE I tell him to wait and walk away and he does not move a paw so he must enjoy standing

Its only a case of teaching them the new cue - he must know what wait means but to him at this point in time sit doesn't mean wait.

PSST - just because the rest of the class uses sit and wait doesn't mean you have to. An example of this is "bang" on the see-saw - everybody used to use touch, contact or wait and then one person used "bang" and now lots of people do.

Lol, I know, Mason can be blonde at times  Anyway I am leaving my stays for this week, and we are starting beginners agility tonight if he passes the assessment so all hold thumbs pls, he has to complete a number of exercises off lead. G is also not too stressed about the sit stay we will probably work on it more when he comes back.

Do you use wait for your recall Mas1981? If you are going to use wait & stay then you use them at different times. I only use wait for recall and change of position. So wait there until I give you a new command. Stay means do not move until I come back to you. I am very particular about this. And about releasing.

Mas1981 when I have built duration I start doing distance. But I drop the duration right back down whilst I am doing the distance. Also try variety, so he doesn't know when you are going to come back. Nothing wrong with going back, reinforcing and then doing more stay.

Mind you I feel like giving up with Poppy as she is still scared in her stays  She is ok if I stay within a couple of meters. Go any further and she starts to freak out. Poor girl. On Sunday she fidgeted away from one dog, realised another one was on the other side, fidgeted back, and then finished the rest of the stay with the paws moving.

You also have to remember that he is a boy - boys have short attention spans, and just when you think that they know what you are asking - you have to go back and explain it all again .

  :(

So it's not just human boys with this problem :)

Does everybody use a hand signal for stay/wait? I don't apart from stepping off on a different foot and giving a voice command and all the judges I've had have mentioned it and advised me to use a hand signal. I know it can be an issue in signals if you get up to UD but I do have a stay signal I can use if I need to.

Yes! You will need it in UD signals. Mine is quite subtle being one finger pointing away from him...hard to explain, (in early training he was confused by my stay and down signal so I changed the stay one to be much higher) and always step off on my right foot.
