caffy
When using a jackpot or toy as a reward, do you still alternate with food or can you just use a toy? Got Mason a tug from Paytons Toybox and he is psycho over it, will literally walk on his back legs for it Something to try - ask Mason for a hand touch and reward him with the tug. You then up the number of hand touches before rewarding him. Why do this - because you can take hand touches into an obedience ring and by pairing it with the tug he will expect that at some stage he will be rewarded with his favourite toy. OH and speaking from experience - I ordered this you beaut tug with rabbit fur from clean run. I showed it to Blaize and she went ballistic over it. A few minutes later the phone rang so I took the call outside, came back in 5 minutes later to find the tug in many many pieces! So don't leave it laying around. Yes, can vouch for a handtouch in the ring. Works great with Snazzy..I paired it with a tug and with food.

Lol I wouldn't take my chances leaving it lying around although saying that he isnt really destructive, his favorite activity is picking his soft toys up in his mouth and just parading them around and then shoving them into my lap if i ignore him. He also has a new thing where he will lay and lick the toys like he licks the cats!!
bedazzledx2
Shouldn't be. She (hopefully it'll be a she) will be bred from working sheepdog lines I think I'd fancy doing a bit of 3 sheep stuff Oh noooooo!!!! Herding will be my next pursuit a bit down the track when I get my kelpie. I have no clue about my right from my left !!! I use back and close as there is no way I can spit out "ooops...other left" in time Hope it's not scared of sheepies like Brookie
bedazzledx2
This is exactly what I do with Brookie too. We even do hand touches for dinner and brekky! bedazzledx2
Think about UD Huski. You will need some sort of signal when you leave your dog in the stand for the distance part at the end of a sometimes lengthy heeling round. Its nice to have the extra of a signal as back up when you leave your dog. I was thinking about dropping the hand signal because I actually don't need it but if I ever advance to the signals exercise I though I'd use hand signals or do most people use verbal signals. I can only speak for myself, but I find just stepping off on the right leg is a clear enough stay signal for Daisy.

Primedogs
sorry just been reading and saw the touch thing and need a bit of clarification, when you say build it up do you mean: sit hand touch, drop hand touch then reward or just multiple hand touches all in the same go and then reward if that makes sense

Yes, can vouch for a handtouch in the ring. Works great with Snazzy..I paired it with a tug and with food. Me too. Ruby enjoys hand touches and spinning in circles as her "reward" between exercises. At one stage the judge was off doing dog knows what for a few minutes between exercises so I had to entertain Ruby for what seemed like eternity! I asked for as many tricks as I could think of that I know she likes

pie
Just watched the Clean Run Need for Speed DVD, heaps of good tips for nervous dogs Will have to try and put some of it into practice - a lot of their points I had already thought of and wondered if they would help him but the DVD has inspired me to try them out.
