huski
Ruby so isn't ready for Open. If there's a darker patch of grass between the solid jump and me, she jumps over the jump with dumbell in mouth and runs around the patch of grass and presents almost at heel I swear that dog has some weird, weird phobias! She always likes to run around dark/strange patches in the grass like it's going to jump out and eat her Did a 3 minute out of sight sit stay last night (coming back a few times to treat) and BOTH girls did it beautifully! Well done!! That's brilliant RS. Out of sight stays are one area I know we will need to work on heaps! I am confident we will go straight into Novice from CCD but training for Open will take a while. I think I'll give Daisy a bit of a break if we get both our CCD and CD titles before the end of the year and will try for Open next year. Daisy has got the basics of the dumbell down pat and will retrieve it over the jump but it's not polished at all and we have tonnes of things to work on. huski
Is CCD the first one and its on lead correct? I am useless with the class names etc, I dont know which one is which and in what order they are maybe I am so clueless as we are not going to be trialling for ages... Yes, CCD is the first one and it's on lead. CCD is optional, though, you can go straight into Novice (CD) if you wish, and that is offlead. Yep the only downside in QLD is that before you can compete in Novice you have to pass a Novice sweepstakes which doesn't count towards your title. So you have to do four trials to get your CD title. I'm still struggling to get a CCD/Novice 1 minute trial scenario sit stay out of Ruby, she still likes to lay down on occasion if she's hot or bored. Especially the bored part, if she's got nothing to look at while she sits there then she leans down to eat the grass (her favourite pastime!) and that leads to her then forgetting what she's doing and lays down to have a good old munch. Down stays she loves, it means she's closer to the grass

huski
Thats ok i would like to do the on lead one first thanks!! I train Daisy so the leash being on or off doesn't matter  We do a lot of off leash training. You need to move Cos that is really screwed I know! I don't think you need as high a score to pass as you would in a Novice trial normally. I could be wrong though (Seita or other QLDers will be able to correct me if I am!) Down stays she loves, it means she's closer to the grass I had serious trouble in our saturday 'special' group class, there are 4 of us G has invited to train now and then on a saturday morning, Mason kept lying down, I would go back and make him sit, he sat for like 3 seconds and down he lays again!! Mason is the baby of the group so its important to me that he can do what the others do and his stays are normally excellent but on saturday he could not do it!! Rivsky
Great news about entering your first trials Huski - have no doubt you'll both do great and have to remember to go back and watch your video a bit later on too! Where do you look when you are doing stays with them? I started counting things behind River during stays - might have been trees, cars, people whatever was behind him as it stopped me staring him down and gave me something to do rather than worrying whether he was going to drop in the sit or not! You might find that stays progress can go backwards and forwards for many years! Ruby's stays were fine until a WEEK before our first CCD trial. She layed down 10 seconds into it, and I've struggled to recover from that problem since!
ness
Nah RubyStar - 7 min drop stays are WORSE!!!!!! especially if you have a dog that decides to sit up as you return - thats heart breaking.

So do tell us - this special group that you are a part of - what were you working on on Saturday? I have discovered a problem - I have rewarded Soggybear so much for sitting and waiting - when I call her she just sits there and goes - nope this is a set up

FHRP
Great news Huski, can't wait to hear your results As I had already guessed, I am struggling with the scent discrim exercise with Polo. He just has not cottoned on to using his nose and is still just grabbing whatever article, regardless of how close another one is or how many are out there (I tried having more options at one stage to see if that would get him thinking). I work through two sets of metal articles in each session. How long do I keep going with this method? Am I teaching him bad habits instead and confusing the exercise? As I previously mentioned, Polo is retrieve mad and has had a lot of training in this area for retrieving trials. He will sit with something in his mouth for a very long time, so I can not just ignore when he retrieves the wrong article. At the moment I am either taking it and saying nothing, or encouraging with movement and voice to go and have another try. At no point is he seeming to use his nose. I know he has a 'good nose', he just hasn't cottoned on to this exercise. Do I persevere with this method longer??

FHRP - give it a break for a few days - then put out one unscented metal and right next to it so 5-10cm apart at most put the scent one out - but try putting some food smell on it - so if you have chicken chunkers/cheese/forlegs etc in your hand while scenting the article. For these sort of dogs you need him to realise that there is more than one article out there. This scented article will be the one you used for the next few sessions. If he is unsuccessful and still brings back the wrong one - let me know. If successful - do it again - rescent the metal with the food again. If he gets it right twice - then try adding another unscented article, again no more than 10cm away.
