Rivsky
Hmm bit of both probably - we do a lot of distraction training but I would love any ideas on games to play or ways to make them more interesting. Daisy's down stays are just very average and not as reliable as I would like them.ETA: Also for those who are trialling/going to trial - how often do you practice group stays? I am finding it hard to find more than one or two dogs at a time to be able to practice groups with. I found River struggled most with the more "boring" stays - things like if I went and sat on the ground or had him do them somewhere where nothing was happening that he could watch were the ones he'd switch off during and would lay down during the sits so I'm trying to get a good balance between distractions and nothing with Zuma's stay training at the moment. Riv hardly ever does any group stay practice now but did used to do them at club pretty regularly before he started trialling. Zuma has done really short ones with some of Ptolomy's kids and Riv but apart from that is yet to do a real group stay and once I've got them solid on our own I think with him it's better for me that I have him do a few formal group stays before I think about entering him. huski
I think what I am worried about is the length of time we will be in the ring for doing stays, there's time outside the ring when you line up to go in, then when when you go in and everyone gets ready, then there's the one minutes sit, then you come back and set the dog up again and then there's the two minute etc etc and I just worry it's such a long time to do something I know Daisy finds pretty damn boring Edited May 16, 2010 by huski
ness
Riv did a group stay at the Steve workshop. I do agree though the boring ones are usually the ones that I have seen cause problems. Edited May 16, 2010 by ness
Ptolomy
I decided to join the local club today as Cider is in need to some distraction training. I did some work outside the clubhouse while the lady swept the verandah, this had Ciderbear in a spin and staying focused was very difficult. Working around an agility tunnel proved easy as did working 30m from the heeling group. Stand stays are improving! Will start her agility training tomorrow night, but will do some obedience training while I am there as well. What club have you joined? I bet they were watching you in awe ;) . ness
Rockingham - its about a 2 minutes walk from where I am living Do those grounds hold some fond memories for me ;) . Although I also DQd myself in Masters Jumping there because I didn't realize under the new rules you couldn't cross back over the startline - oops. Just as well she pulled a bar I would have been majorly annoyed if she had run clear. Edited May 17, 2010 by ness

From a baby - I used to let Lara out of the car to chase the seagulls at this oval, that was before I knew about dog trials and trailling. When I realised there was a trial at this oval - I was so excited that it was my home ground, I arrived early, opened the car doors and out jumped Lara and off she took chasing the seagulls - OOPS
ness
I remember you telling me that story Ptolomy. But nope I will always remember it - second CDX pass and argh the van we had to hide behind during stays which had windows where you could see your dog but they couldn't see you and my bloody dog decides to start scratching during the 3 minute sit. I had to sit down at that point it was like some form of cruel and unusual punishment to watch that knowing there was nothing you could do. His fav trick is when the dogs are barking and I tell them to hush he waits till they are all quiet then looks at me and goes 'rowrf' as if to say
