kathq
Huski dont stress. That particular class is fairly obviously still working on methods from when Noah was a boy. You are training Daisy in an enlightened way that is from what I saw at the photo shoot the other day working wonders. So in my humble opinion keep on keeping on. Seita
Ugh what a crappy night at training. Daisy was working quite well but the people I usually train with couldn't make it so I decided to jump into a little casual trialling class that is run on the grounds. Never again I was excited to get feedback from other people but all I got was negative remark after negative remark even when I tried to explain the reasons I do things (i.e. I had my treat pouch on because I didn't have big enough pockets in my pants, Daisy can work with or without the treat pouch there it does not make a difference to her at all). We did not get a single piece of encouragement or positive comment. Everyone broke off to do their own thing and I got Daisy's articles out to give them a go. She was working really well and one of the ladies in the class came over and said "You shouldn't be doing that. That is an exercise from a higher level and you are just confusing her!" I explained we have been doing SD for months now and Daisy never gets confused, in fact it's improved our training as doing different things makes it exciting for her. She argued with me and kept telling me I was basically stuffing up my own dog, and that if I was trialling and another dog was doing the exercise in another ring she would run off to do it (WTF). Trying to end the conversation I said that obviously the people I train with and talk to do things differently, and she said "well then why do you come here?" I said I don't know what you mean? She said that if I don't like the way they train I shouldn't bother coming Considering this was my first time in the class I had no idea "how" they trained, I thought it was just a casual trialling class and I was totally minding my own business when everyone was off doing their own thing. She then went off to where a group of other people were standing and told them what I was doing and THEN went and told the instructor! Who did give me some constructive advice on my handling but again... lots of negative things but not one remotely positive comment. I felt like a little kid getting in trouble and they made me feel totally crap about my dog. I tried to be light hearted and friendly but I ended up leaving early, I am a bit sensitive at the moment and just felt like crying, and I knew I was making it a crappy session for Daisy. Ugh sorry to vent just had to get that all off my chest!! Will never make the mistake of joining in that class ever again! That's awful Daisy! I used to get that sort of attitude at another club I trained at but by the time I switched clubs my dog already had her CDX so I've never really been working on advanced stuff beyond my dogs current level at this club. I wonder what sort of comments I'll get when I start training a new pup there in the next few months! You'll just have to catch up with me more often to train! Careful of your seekback signal. The rules require that you point to the track and some judges can get very 'thing' about it. You will lose points if they perceive that you are pointing to the article and I have known judges to take a heap of points off. Not worth it...I point to the ground directly in front of me so there is no question. Ditto but in German. Anything involving nose I use seek/find and anything involving fetching is bring. I use the same hand signal for scent discrim and retrieves and seek back which is some sort of obscure wave of the hand in the direction I want the dog to go, I never really bothered with these hand signals as she's not usually watching me rather the track/dumbell/articles etc. For Gloves however I bend down slightly and point with a kind of outstretched arm and hand next to her head pointing to the glove I want her to get. If I were to use too many different commands I would get confused, I already struggle enough with bring and seek at times! To clarify, I wave in the direction of the track, never at the article cos I haven't got a clue where it is anyway. I'd rather not point at the ground in front of me cos I want my dog to go back to the start peg and search from there so I just flick my hand off in the direction we came from if that makes sense? TerraNik
Probably more of a brag than anything else, but Jedi and I just got back from his review with his dermatologist.... Looks like Jedi's improving! The vet is happy with Jedi's progress - particularly that he is no longer dependent on cortisone (steroids). He does have a massive staph infection all over his body though - so he's on a long course of antibiotics. The vet said that once the infection is gone he should scratch even less!! So we're continuing with his immunotherapy and seeing where we're at in 3-6 months time. The vet was really pleased that Jed has been doing so well in the obedience ring despite his itchiness. Yee Har - will sing and dance for you - this is terrific news. Usually they are not prepared to say the immunotherapy is working for ages. We are on the weaning off stage but as the dermatologist keeps telling me - its an art not a science when you get to this stage - so stuck on 2 weekly injections for the next 6 months Beans has done several 6 week stints on antibiotics for infections - so know how you feel - but would rather AB's than steroids if given the choice. So onto the novice debut in just over a week

So onto the novice debut in just over a week I know! I made a pretty graph of Jedi's itch scores and when we had given him pred -- the vet was very impressed But it showed that his reliance on the pred has diminished significantly (used to be every 2nd day, then every week and now he gets the odd one every couple of weeks) and yet his itch scores have come down to about 6-7/10. He said we still have a way to go with it, but there's definitely an improvement. Jedi's antibiotic course is for 3 weeks and then I have to let him know if it's made a difference. He said that once the infection's treated his scores should drop significantly. So yay! Yep!! I can't wait for his first novice trial! I'm really excited! NZVizsla
Huski, I experienced a similar situation with my older Vizsla. I got told I was ruining him as I was pushing him too fast, and that when we did trial he'd be so depressed it wouldn't be worth it!! Many club members/trainers don't like someone doing things outside the norm, and they may have found you too confident with what your doing, so had to knock you down a peg or two. That's what I found. I don't do clubs anymore - I have private consults. Keep up with the awesome work!!
huski
Wow thanks for all the comments everyone! I feel much better today I agree it is quite old fashioned thinking, it is a clicker based class so you think they would be more open minded but obviously not. There are lots of areas I know I need to improve on but I KNOW Daisy loves doing SD and she is good at it and it definitely does not confuse her and I know way too many excellent triallers who start teaching UD type exercises from early on to worry that I'm going to stuff my dog up. Seita we should organise another training session soon!
Sue & Waldo
sorry that you had such a bad time but I am sure Daisy just showed how good she was and they were jealous! i find comments like that very unsettling but you Daisy is doing so well you must be doing something right! It is a good thing that they did not see me working with Cindy this morning. I have just had the worse training session ever. I had trouble finding a positive note to finish on! First time ever she has had crooked recalls, no drops, lagging heeling...made me think of scratching on Sunday. No reminding me of "this is fun" posts ......wanders off humming Onward Christian Soldiers and thinking about dog training wars...
RubyStar
Walk away!!!! That sort of attitude is so old fashioned. I got told 16 years ago not to confuse my kelpie with all that extra stuff....yep...scent and retrieves...as I would only confuse her as she was a novice dog. Funny thing is that she went on to get UD but the instructor never did put more than a CDX on her dog! These days I would be teaching a puppy scent! Not the finished product but the concept. This club sounds like they train from the dark ages!!!! And if that was the attitude most of us carried around, most of our dogs wouldn't be doing more than one discipline! Our dogs are smart enough to learn different things and different disciplines So glad I wasn't around to train in times like those! Training is so much fun when you can throw as many different things at your dog as you both can handle, which is quite a few

JulesP
I find a lot of people have a very negative approach to teaching . They only tell you what is wrong, rather than also praise the good bits. Some people can handle this method, some can't. I know I can't. I tend to teach in a 'that was good but if you did this it would be brilliant' manner. So chin up Huski! I agree Jules - we like a good rate of reinforcement, just as much as our dogs do. A lot of my confidence issues with training/trialling last year can be traced back to a not great attitude at training and some of the above type stuff being aimed at me. It's taken quite a while to get past it. Some of you guys are unbelievably lucky to have the training and people available to you that you do - I really hope you realise that.
