PoppyDog
Hi Everyone! My 10 week old CKCS X will be going to the vet tomorrow for her 2nd vac and to be microchipped. Do you have any tips/advice to make this a positive experience for puppy and/or us? Should I take treats with me to give her? TIA!
WreckitWhippet
I adopt the no nonsense approach. I practice putting my pups up on the table at home basically from the time their eyes open, I check them over give them a pat and pop them back in the box. You could do this with your young one, it won't help for tomorrow but lots of handling and being used to the table will benefit down the track. Don't make a big fuss over the pup. Try and stay calm. Don't be afraid to pop into your vets from time to time throughout her life, even if you walk in the door say hi to whoever is on the front counter and walk out again. Daydreamer
Yep, definitely take some treats and maybe a chew toy, for while your waiting Our vets had some of those dried liver treats on the counter so have a look round if you forget to take any. I'm sure she'll get lots of fuss off everyone and be absolutely fine but as a mum of a pup too I know how you feel
SpikesPuppy
I do the same as SBT123 (table my pups and get them used to handling), as well as the no-nonsense approach. I like to chat to my dog in a happy voice "We're gonna see the vet! Yes!" (okay, I'm a looney ), and if the pup shows any signs of discomfort I reassure it with a calm voice "Don't be silly, the vet wont hurt you" etc. I also like to massage my dog's ears when they are up on the table (always have.... even with those who are perfectly comfortable at the vet), and offer them treats sporadically. Cazwah
Hi there, I was more frightened than my pup was at our first visit, I reckon I agree, take lots of treats (liver, not cheese, we got an earful for bringing cheese!) and definitely something to chew.. I'd reccommend writing a list of any questions you have too. We wrote one and still managed to forget to ask some things. Best of luck, I'm sure it will be fine. Also don't know if it helps but we got the vet to clip his nails for us and showtalk us through how to do it ourselves.
Sandra777
I agree, take lots of treats (liver, not cheese, we got an earful for bringing cheese!) Vet would get an earful from me if they tried that one
Sezy
Don't stress and keep it positive. My guys all love going to the vet, it is someone exciting to see. I did work experience at my vet back home so my girls first trip to the vet as soon as we got in the door, the vet nurse took her and went about her work with my pup under her arm..... W Sibs
stay calm and positive. if/when the puppy is whining or crying.. totally ignore it. don't touch it or sook it up.. just ignore that behaviour. you can stand there with the pup, so the pup knows you are there.. but don't fuss over the puppy (this may be hard for a few people, but it's best for the pup) sbt123 gave good advice too. make it stand on the table and touch her everywhere... you can pretend to play vet with looking in the ears, touching his tummy area and lifting up the pup's tails the first time we took Charlie for a quick walk, then we took him about half hour early so he could have a sniff around the place, meet everyone there and see that it's not bad. when we got into the room, he remained happy. when we put him on the table, he was still sniffing and our vet is great.. interact with him a lot. charlie was busy eating a liver treat when he got his needle and didn't even notice his injection! poodlefan
Keep pup onlead or in a carry box and don't allow her to greet other dogs at the vets. She only has partial immunity and other dogs may not appreciate attention. It's no big deal. Acting calm and confident will convey that to Poppy. Incavale
I'd be interested in knowing if your vet made any comment about desexing your pup!
PoppyDog
She was a star pupil! I did the whole strong and confident thing and the vet commented on how well we are doing with her and what a good pup she was! She vac'd her and chipped her, checked her over, checked her anal glands (as she has been scooting even tho she has been wormed twice) and was very happy with her. She went through the care of a puppy with me. When to worm her, flea treatment, nutrition etc but then said "Oh well I know your doing all this anyway" as I had talked about it with her during the consult. Poppy has a red bottom from scooting so we got some cream to put on twice a day for that. Incavale - She did mention desexing, said I had to wait till 6 months. Why did you wonder about that?
