My Unusual Visitors

My baby Holly is a rescue from the culls up north, she is 3 months old (and drinking 7 litres of milk per day). Zippy is an ex racing camel (7 yrs) and she is HUGE and Sahara is a 3 year old bull camel that I bought as an 8 month old. His mum is the main camel in the movie Kangaroo Jack. I am still going to get a white one and also a black one, my cousin has seen pieds or pintos up North too.

We have saddled Zippy and ridden her once, she has been very badly handled in the past but is getting much better. I find the main issue with them is when excited they jump and throw their front legs out and kick with their back legs so it is scary when caught in the middle of them. Zippy has given me one good kick in the thigh, I didn't realise they could kick sideways and she got me while I was doing up the girth. I had a lovely bruise for about 2 weeks.

When I got Zippy she had virtually no hump, she was very underweight as you can see now her hump is very healthy :(

That's really nice of you to think of them and it makes me think if any DOLer's live on the National Trail they should keep a look out for Bernadette and Rob Sutton and their 4 camels, Black Jack, Teewah, Dodge and Wolf. They're good people.

If you are really serious they would be good people to speak to for advice. They either made, or got friends to make most of their pack saddles and bags. They wont be home for another 7 months or so though.

Here's Pagan sneaking a cautious peek at Black Jack

and here she is just being her beautiful self.

We are seroius about doing a trek, once the house is built we are hoping to do the 15 day Simpson Desert trek for a start with a tour. My sister and brother in laws do industrial upholstering so can make most of what we need when our guys are ready when we are older. We have a saddle and my OH is a welder and is going to make more for us too.

If you could pm me there details I will contact them when they get back, I am interested in finding out who the SA camels came from as I know most of them down here

Thank you

I told them about you being interested and they said to tell you they got their camels from Phil Gee, Explore the Outback. Rob did a course with him about 10 years ago and it went for 6 days and at the end you could take you camel home if you wanted. That's how he got Black Jack.

The Trail is at the end of my street, only about 6 houses away. When do they expect to be in the Canberra area? I'll keep an eye out

They've just left here, I came in and saw your message so I will have to guess. They will take the first week slow, they think, and plan to stay a few days in Marysville to both rest the camels, and support the town. After that I think they will be trying to make quick time to get through before the snows, so I would say about 2 months, look out for them mid to late April. The other thing you could do is to contact the local co ordinator in that area by emailing the BNT office. They will hopefully know when they are around. I hope you get to meet them. Say hi from Linda if you do. :(
