"It irritates them" "How would you like it"?

My daughters love being stroked on the back of the head when relaxing, or even playing with their hair and I havent been bitten or snarled at yet.

I usually cheek fondle or shoulder scratch.

There's PAT and there's STROKE- I see them as two different things.. patting to my view is done with the palm.. and is like a light slapping thingy... stroking is gently sliding along the skin surface...

I rarely PAT a dog- it is usually a stroke....or a skritch :)

Tell that to Cody. He loves it. If you stop before he's ready, he shoves his face back into your hand. :)

My Shep does a hardcore bum dance, then she will start trying to shake hands.

Elliot used to go behind you, go between your legs and try and lift you up via your crutch.

Whippet does a half eye close and tries her noble look

Well it took me a second to get over the mental picture of you stroking your daughters lover on the head, but assuming you are talking about how dogs react - mine don't like the 'thump thump' type patting on the head much, but they love having their ears played with or me stroking the top of their noses. I think it's about the type of touch as much as the location, and how much they trust the person doing it.

Was it in the context of meeting a new dog, or a dog that you are quite familiar with. I think a little more clarity is warranted before people can truly comment.

Positive reinforcement of your own animal.

No definitions of pats or glides either.

Never been a head thumper myself

Who said it?

If they said "never pat a STRANGE dog on the head or neck" that would make sense.

Some people really thump dogs when they pat them.. very different to stroking.

depending on the nature of this thread, it may not be the right thing to do at this point. People may be looking for a trainer in Melbourne, google the name and read negative comments. I will PM you at this stage

My Belgian likes a quick pat on the head but sometimes she will shy away from your hand. She much prefers a scratch on the side of the face or loves a rub under the chin. She also loves her ears rubbed.

My Pointer couldn't care less where she is patted around the head.

Bit off topic, but people ALWAYS do this the minute I start listening to a dog's heart. Thump, thump, there's a good dog, stay still for the vet, thump. Argh, my ear holes!!!! :vomit: The dog with the loudests thumping owners are usually the ones standing rock solidly still too :o

On topic, if that statement was prefaced with 'never pat a strange dog on the head or neck' I'd agree. Shoulder or chest is much less threatening to them. Meanwhile, my two dogs are fans of the 'insert head under human hand and pretend its like a pat' maneouvre.
