weisnjac
My latest litter has 2 dogs and a bitch They are 3 weeks old. The girl has had two funnly looking lumps down near her groin for about the last week. You can only see them when you pick her up and hold her upright. They are squishy and it has me worried about inguinal hernias. I've never had any experience with them, just going by what I can find on the net. Pippa (dam) has had 2 previous litters with nothing like this before. I have been doing some research and it looks like it is either hernias or fat. They are not there all the time and the size changed, they can be just a small rise or quite big lumps. I have an appointment with the vet tonight as I am starting to get a bit worried, will the vet be able to tell me what exactly it is at this age? I've read so many different things that I'm just all confused Edited February 12, 2010 by weisnjac
Gretel
It does sound like inguinal hernias from your description.

weisnjac
So what happens now? She was supposed to kept by me to keep my girls like going but that's obviously not going to happen now. I've read about them needing surgery but what age is it recommended? Are they all different or can I hold off until I get her desexed? The boys were bound for show/breeding homes but I assume they would be also better off desexed as I've read it's Hereditary?
WreckitWhippet
Yep , that's what it sounds like. If that's what they are, congenital inguinal hernias are rare in comparision to the aquired hernia, which is the one that is often seen in intact breeding bitches. ETA: I have bred a puppy with an inguinal hernia, she was removed from the gene pool and desexed. Edited February 12, 2010 by SBT123

weisnjac
Thanks BB. As usual, I have over reacted My vet can see what I mean but isn't at all worried at this stage she said it is too hard to tell what it is yet and wants to see her again at 6 weeks. I have full trust in this vet as she has been there a very long time and I have been seeing her in forever. Saying that, I think I will take her down to Monash to get things checked out when she is older also, can't hurt to double check I am breathing a little easier now Edited February 12, 2010 by weisnjac
