A PUREBRED six-week-old pup owes her life to a blood transfusion from a gentle greyhound more than 15 times her size.

Cairns resident Sami Knoblock had a tearful reunion with her English staffordshire terrier yesterday after their scary ordeal.

Ms Knoblock said Buddy was vomiting and could hardly lift her 1.6kg body to stand on Tuesday, The Cairns Post reports.

She rushed her dying dog to Brinsmead Veterinary Surgery where Greencross principal surgeon Max Fargher found a hookworm infestation that had caused a massive haemorrhage.

With Buddy at death's door, Dr Fargher raced home to get his trusty pooch Hurley, a six-year-old male 34kg greyhound.

Dr Fargher then performed a transfusion by transferring a "drop" of Hurley's blood – 120ml – to Buddy.

"I wasn't 100 per cent confident it was going to work – Buddy only has 120ml (of blood in her system) and the transfusion simply replaced it," he said.

and if the owner isn't the breeder then why the hell is someone selling 6 wo puppies....sigh...I know because they can if they aren't registered breeders

How does a two or three week old puppy get hookworm. Genuine question, is it passed on from mum or resident in soil?

Now there's a surprise, hope she reported them to the SPCA instead.

Agree with everyone's comments (5 week pup sold - WTF?, worm infested to extrem - WTF?, purebred Staffy - WTF?)

However, was nice of the lovely vet to help out using his dog. A sweet ending.

The puppy may be 6 weeks and 5 days old but that really makes no diffrerence it was still waaay too young

These pups would have been infected in utero or by drinking Mum's milk.

Says a lot about the health care the brood bitch gets doesn't it. And yes folks, dogs can pass these on to us.

The warm wet weather contributes to the Hookworm problem that is common in tropical areas.

It actually does not take much for a young pup to have a serious burden in the weather we have been having.

Walking barefoot in the tropics is enough for a human to be affected also, the larvae actually migrate through the skin.

This made the news last night and said that the cairns purebred english stafford terrier was lucky to be alive etc etc (same as in the paper everything wrong) and they also interviewed Knoblock quickly and she said that the pup had not eaten for 2 days before she decided to take her to the vet :D As usual the news kept on saying purebred when in fact the poor dog was anything but. I can be sure that this pup if it is from Cairns would have come from one of the many backyarders we have here breeding staffys. Every week in the paper there can be 10 or so adds claiming purebred staffy pups yet none of them come with papers and only a couple of them are lucky to be vacc n wormed yet the price ranges from approx $300 to $800 depending on colour and most are available at 6 weeks however have seen ads before with 5 wks.

The quick segment then went on about the greyhound and how loyal and loving they are (a lot of greyhounds are for giveaway here atm due to racing closing down)

As usual alot of incorrect facts that the public will believe because they saw it on tv and it was on the news so must be correct then
