Sick pup needs help to mend a broken heart

BY SANDRA BULL

HARRY Heart Murmur urgently needs up to $10,000 to mend his broken heart.

If the lovable King Charles Cavalier pup doesn't have the operation he will die within a year, owner of the Pets Paradise store at Parkmore shopping centre Cally Loridas said last week.

Harry Heart Murmur, as he has been dubbed, was sold to the Keysborough pet store by a registered breeder. But soon after being bought, he was diagnosed with the serious inherited heart condition patient ductus arteriosis. Mrs Loridas immediately refunded the customer and set about healing Harry.

The 15-week-old is living full-time at Mrs Loridas' home until she raises enough cash for open-heart surgery to close a leaking blood vessel.

"He's such a lovely dog, so happy-go-lucky and loves everybody. We just couldn't have little Harry put down," she said.

Animal specialist centre SARC in Highett has offered to do the operation at cost price - between $3000 and $10,000, depending on how intricate the procedure turns out to be.

Any donations left over will be given to Harry's next owner for his upkeep. But selecting a new, loving owner is way off in the future until the pup returns to full health.

Anyone wanting to help can give a gold coin donation at the store for a chance to win a prize.

Bull. Registered with who? Registered as a dog breeding business I bet. Its a pathetic attempt by PP to have a go at registered breeders. I would bet my last dollar that the 'breeder' was not an AKC breeder. I know for a fact where the vast majority of PP puppies in Victoria come from and it does not surprise me one bit that they are sick.

ETA: I have sent in a comment. Wonder if it gets approved? Hehe!

All seems a bit fishy to me. My in laws got a puppy with a heart condition and she had surgery I doubt the person selling her paid $10k for the surgery.. she was sold for $150.

If it was a registered breeder why haven't Pets Paradise returned her to them anyway?

I am with you Kirty... Just another way for PP to grab attention and now they will have 100's of calls regarding Harry... Not bad PR..

And where is the breeder in all this? Breeding pups with serious and inherited disorders. Disgusting.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear the real story, including the breeder's story, before we label a media report "disgusting"?

Don't forget there are BYB's who call themselves registered when they are in fact only registered with the local council.

Don't kid yourselves for a minute that ANKC registered breeders don't sell puppies to pet stores - they do.

That said, I"m not taking this on face value. PP pay bugger all for pups and sell them for $$$$. Why any CKCS breeder would need to offload to a pet store beats me.

I have overheard staff in PP one day telling potential customers that the fluffy doodles in the window had registration papers.

There is way more than meets the eye to this story. It reeks.

Maybe it was to keep the prefix/ breeders name clear, so other breeders don't find out about this 'little' hick-up in the bloodline?

The only animal thing I donate to is Pets Haven. Because I like the work they do.

The last time I went to PP, I saw a GSP cross Brittany... I asked the prize, because I was trying to prove something to my boyfriend, and they told me both parents were papered, but it was a 'accidental' mating! :)

My boyfriend thought it would be cheaper to buy from a pet shop, so I asked the prize, $600, I told him it will probably have unknown health issues, and temperament could be all over the place, and then told him the gerenal cost of a registered breeders pup, health test are done, all the goodies you get too and he know only wants pedigree purebred! :driving:

By 'goodies' I mean pedigree papers, diet sheets, care sheets, vaccinations, micro shipping, viewing a parent or even both parents, breeder support for life, puppy photos, known temperament of parents, etc, etc, etc.

Converted another person to registered breeders! :provoke::mad

I know someone with an ANKC papered dog (on limit reg) which was bought from a pet store, he's a nice healthy dog though.

I was curious that they thought the op would cost $10k since my dogs' complicated shunt op was $5k I went looking for cost comparisons and found this page on rescued with love which suggests that the $10k figure may be a bit of an exaggeration since they were quoted $3k.

Yep. If cost price is up to 10,000 I hate to think what the regular price would be.

It's not against the COE of the ANKC to sell to certain pet shops :driving:

26. A member shall not:

.1 Sell or dispose of a dog to a commercial pet wholesaler or retail pet shop unless they are accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA).

(I presume PP is PIAA accredited)

However, they have breached this code:

25. A member shall ensure that all dogs sold or disposed or by that member are in the best possible state of health. Where a dog with a health issue or disability is disposed of the member must obtain from the recipient written and signed acknowledgement of the condition of the dog.

Bit of a scam by PP though. Really? They care SO MUCH about this dog??? Bullcrap. They just want everyone to think they are so wonderful giving this little doggy a chance.

Re comments about the "breeder" all registered breeders are not ethical!!!!! I would have thought there had been enough threads over the years about dogs bought from registeres breeders who were full of hereditary problems for people to realise that. Hang around dog shows long enough and you will find out who they are and sometimes it is a shock.

No, I don't believe animals should be sold through pet shops but neither do I believe that all registered breeders are ethical.

Pets Paradise are NOT acrredited ,members of PIAA so then they are not eligible to be sold puppies from Registered Breeders. The Canine Council should be asking PP what breeder he came from and deal with the breeder if it is true then
