poochmad
She looks a lovely, healthy weight to me. We used to have a lab and a goldie and were forever defending their body shape. Just remember, your dog will live longer than the poor chubby grossly overweight ones. Edited February 17, 2010 by poochmad

WreckitWhippet
She looks fine to me, I would like to get my hands on her and see how she feels.
macka
She looks fit. She has no belly hair; that makes her look skinnier. Look at the hair in this photo of a GR in similar condition: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=9383
JulesP
Yeah think it is the lack of belly hair that makes her looked tucked up. Don't worry about it deelee. I get told my dogs are fat because they have heaps of coat. I know they aren't, so I just ignore the comments.

dee lee
Thanks guys. I agree, I think the lack of fringing on her belly is a bit deceptive- that may be why she appears skinny to some people. It will be interesting to see if it grows back in again properly (she was shaved for desexing late last year) when she gets her winter coat. Quickasyoucan
She actually does look at lot different in this second lot of pics in fact the above pic does not have that much of a defined waist at all, I wouldn't have thought it the same dog as the one in the first shot. In the first shot she did seem to have an exaggerated tuck (well more than I would expect to see on a GR) but it is amazing how different coated breeds look wet to dry. I was always amazed at the small dog hiding under the coat when we bathed our springer spaniels. With my dog he looks the same dripping wet as he does dry I agree giving her a feel would give a better idea, difficult to see what's hair and what's not but from the second pics particularly the above shot she doesnt' look thin at all IMO. Greytmate
She looks great. Like Poodlefan said, you wouldn't be able to tell whether she was ideal weight or slightly underweight unless you felt her ribs. She certainly looks healthy, so if she is slightly under ideal weight, it doesn't seem to be doing her any harm. Keeping a dog at the 'right weight' may mean you have to her adjust diet seasonally, and again depending on what activities you are doing with her. Given that you have only had the dog a few months, maybe start a weight chart and feel her ribs regularly and keep note of how much exercise she has done. If you want your dog to be PERFECTLY at the right weight, that is the sort of thing you would do, along with weighing ingredients and things. BUT, who says your dog has to be PERFECT weight? Much better that she is about right, and a bit skinnier after summer holidays running around the beach with the kids and a bit less skinny after a lazy winter staying inside. The main thing is that your dog is not one of those poor bloody slab-sided things that could easily have its back used as a coffee table. A poor dog that is slow to get up because it hurts so much. With an owner so used to seeing dogs like that, that they are ignorant as to what a healthy dog looks or acts like. That is what is important Deelee. tdierikx
Spot on Greytmate! Deelee... your girl looks just perfect to me... and I'm very sure that Wendy would agree too. Are you going to be going to the group dog training that Wendy instructs at when they start up again in March? Wendy will love to see Honey and feel her all over for you and let you know if she needs to gain, lose, or stay exactly as she is, OK? T.
Parkeyre
She looks like my "thin" Australian Shepherd bitch. i think they are both healthy, and a little naked around the tummy
KitKat
I used to have a pure bred Lab...he was 40kg but all muscle and a big build.- no digging thru fat for ribs or any of that. Another Lab i knew was a Govt working dog and lean muscle - big bulky build and all muscle and was also 40kg odd... To me your girl looks good...lean but she looks like she'd be slim of build anyway so slender is perfect for her Perhaps because she's nto a ball of fluff this confuses people? Kirty
labsrule, notice I said the dog was the same height and build as my dog - in my opinion, the Lab I saw should have weighed between 25-30kg. He was morbidly obese and suffering health problems as a result. My dog is lean - not skinny. He has a lovely waist, he is not emaciated. deelee, I think Honey looks great. It is much healthier for dogs to be a bit on the thin side, than fat.

Hi T, I would love to go to Wendy's classes but they are a bit far for me to go unfortunately. I'm planning on dropping her an email with some pics this week to let her know how Honey is going. I have just started with a dog training club nearby and the instructor has complimented me on Honey's condition. KitKat- yes she is very slim built, a petite little thing, and she certainly isnt a fluffball atm. Edited February 18, 2010 by ✽deelee
