Dame Aussie
Hi Guys, I feel as though I may aswell be paying my vets mortgage.... About 2 weeks ago we took Mosley (Anatolian Shepherd) to the vet as one of his eyes seemed a bit irritated. The vet had a look and said she could see a tiny scratch so he had cream and anti-inflammatories and all was well. Until.....a couple of days later his OTHER eye started playing up. We cleaned it with salt water and put some cream in and it also cleared up almost overnight. Well last night I noticed that it's happened again!!! It really just looks like very mild conjunctivitis to me. There isn't any gunk and it doesn't seem to be bothering him too much but the bottom is a bit pink and swollen. Does this sound like conjunctivitis? I'm going to see the vet again, but I am worried that even if we keep treating it, it will keep coming back!! Can it be caused by allergies to a plant or dust or something?? He does have a penchant for rolling around in the dirt My other dog hasn't shown the same symptoms and they are both in good health. Any ideas??
Golden Rules
Have you tried bathing the eyes in Colloidal silver? Extremely effective and not expensive. Another option is cold black tea, very good for conjunctivitis.
Dame Aussie
I was thinking of trying some cold tea, thanks Golden Rules

puggy_puggy
Go and see an eye specialist.
poodlefan
I'd suggest a trip to the vet. Conjuntivitis can often be a symptom of other issues.. dry eye, allergies etc. No point in treating the symptoms if you're not addressing the cause. Personally I would not recommend you put ANYTHING in a sore eye without veterinary approval. I'd certainly not be using cold tea
Dame Aussie
I only went along with cold tea as many other posts here had suggested the same thing for just what my boys experiencing? Edited February 9, 2010 by Aussie3
poodlefan
I only suggested cold tea as many other posts here had suggested the same thing for just what my boys experiencing? Most uses of cold tea for eyes apply it externally to reduce puffiness. I'd be very cautious about introducing it INTO the eye. A red eye is inflamed or infected (or both). What sort of condition are your dog's teeth in. When my older girl's eyes start playing up, is usually a sign she needs them scaled.
Dame Aussie
Ah ok, his teeth are pretty good, he's under 18 months old, the vet seemed happy with them. The picture below is just what his eye looks like.
poodlefan
Another scratch maybe? You can use human eye drops on dogs. I'd be keener about using those than a home remedy. Make sure anything that goes in an eye is sterile.
Dame Aussie
Yeah it could be, we're going to the vet to get it checked out, I just hope this time it doesn't come back!

My boy had irritated eyes too and it ended up being chronic dry eye. Even after months of treatment, he developed ulcers and to cut to the chase, still has chronic dry eye in one of his eyes, (he had the other removed) and is attending an eye specialist, now 6 monthly, unless we have other eye problems with him. Addicted2gold
My vet suggested cold chamomile tea into the eye for conjunctivitis. She tells me most specialist also recommend this now instead of medicated eye drops.

Dame Aussie
Not caused by an ingrown eyelash or a mild entropion? I don't know much about Entropion to be honest, it doesn't look like the eyelid is folded over though, just swollen.
persephone
Cold tea can be very useful in reducing mild cases of conjunctivitis/irritation . I have used it for many years, on many dogs. Our workers get a lot of eye irritation- and cold tea - naturally made fresh- dripped into the eyes, as per any drops ,a few times a day, does seem to help. It is apparently the mild tannic acid which does the trick if you aren't steady enough to pour/drip- then just squeeze a teabag ,and use the drops from the corner . Dame Aussie
Well we went to the vet last night, he checked for any scratches etc and all was good there. He seems to think it is just irritation to dust etc, the weather in Melbourne has been pretty hot lately and our backyard is a dust pit We asked about ingrown eyelashes and he says its a possibility but very unlikely as this is affecting both eyes. We have some eye drops so will see how we go with them! Thanks for all your advice
