Whipitgood
Just wondering how old is "old" in terms of using a dog in its older years over a bitch. I am considering using a lovely boy but he is somewhat aged at 9 years. I realise that the the sperm count declines in numbers with age, but it only takes a few healthy ones to reach the very few eggs the bitch has produced. What are others experiences, good or bad? Sandra777
My UK import was from the last litter of his sire, who was 14 when the pups were conceived. I wouldn't consider 9 to be old for a Whippet.
mersonmalinois
I know of a toy poodle stud that was 17 when he sired a litter. The owner had to get permission from the AKC to register the litter as I think the cut-off age for stud dogs is 12 unless you get permission. Maggie-mae
I had a 10 yr old kelpie who produced me 10 puppies in a litter! Just get the sperm tested before you use him & you'll get your answer.
whippets
Go for it. I used Cruiser when he was about 9 and got 8 puppies in the litter.
Kirislin
I know of a whippet who sired an "oops" litter at 11. He had cancer and his owners thought he was well past it but he surprised them all.
becks
How do you mean the dog is 'somewhat aged at 9 years'? Are you just refereing to his age or to his health, that he looks and behaves old?
Ashanali
Used an untried 8 year old pointer once... one mating, 8 puppies.
Miranda
The oldest sire I know of was 13.
oakway
9 is not old for a Whippet. If you are in any doubt get a sperm test done.
Whipitgood
How do you mean the dog is 'somewhat aged at 9 years'? Are you just refereing to his age or to his health, that he looks and behaves old? All i mean is that he is not necessarily in his prime. he s a retired show dog who leads a quiet life at home on the sofa! He is healthy. I guess a 9 year old dog to me, when the average life span would be about 10-13, is "somewhat aged". Good to know that this doesnt necessarily affect their fertility! :D Thanks for your replies. Bisart Dobes
I know someone who has just their 'oldies' left from a toy breed they used to breed and exhibit - one male 15 & one bitch 14 years old - she had a suprise litter late last year !!! and she coped beautifully - the only one who wasn't happy was the dad as he was kicked out of their kennel overnight until they realised she'd had pups and then moved her inside to a whelping box
