GABBA
I will be getting my dog microchiped, but i have heard that different methods are used in different states (i may be wrong, please advise). Either way, i'd like to know when is an appropriate age to get my dog microchiped in NSW? This may be a really straight forward question, but any assistance is appreciated. Aziah
If you purchase the puppy within NSW then legally, it should be chipped before you collect it (several states are the same).
Jetty
I am not sure what the law is in NSW but in QLD since last year it was by law suppose to be done once you have purchased the dog. How old is your dog? If it is old enough to be desexed get both done at once saves the pup from getting the needle as it can be discomforting while they are awake. ♪♫LMBC♫♪
Yes, in NSW it is illegal to sell a pup without a chip. I'd be wary of someone who doesn't chip their dogs before they sell them. Who knows what other corners they cut to save costs.
WreckitWhippet
If you didn't breed the dog it should already have been done prior to being sold or given away. The rule in NSW is that every puppy must be chipped prior to change of ownership or before the puppy turns 12 weeks ( whichever comes first ). GABBA
Ah ok, thanks, so it is a procedure that can be done while the puppy is still very young. I am located in NSW, however the dog is from interstate. I have read my council's website and it also reiterates that the dog must be microchiped before 12weeks, which is no big deal, i have plenty of time left. Thanks. Partipaws
I am waiting as long as possible to get my litter of pups done - well meaning that once the new owners book a time to pick them up I go and get the chip done - My pom puppies are so very small at 6-8 weeks most weighing a mere 500-700 grams around this time and even my vet prefers me to wait a while as he can barely pinch enough skin to insert the needle :D poor little buggers!!!! Some vets I have been told by other pom breeders prefer to wait until their pups make the 1 kilo mark before they will chip. In NSW all pups should be sold with first vaccination and microchip done - registered breeders, pets stores and any other registered business or enterprise that specialises in the sale of pets and animals must follow the above protocol - Backyard breeders and puppy mills are obviously harder to police so most cut costs and sell pups as is and wipe their hands of the proper protocol! Partipaws
Also I had a 6 month old pup microchipped - I bought from a breeder and she was not done - I know tisk tisk, but there were no problems or penalties for getting her done that late???? Not sure if it differs from council to council?
