Dog Medical Papers And Xrays

At the moment, the boyfriend and I are trying to get all of Charlie's medicial papers and xrays together... but the people at the specialist place says that they can't just give it to us. They can transfer Charlie's file to another vet/specialist, but only if the other vet/specialist agrees on it.

Is this how it works?

We were thinking about going to the specialist place to have a talk with them on Saturday about it or will it be a waste of time?

As avet nurse, I was always told that if a client has paid for x-rays, they own them & can do with them as they please.

cw, I recently came up with a similar question and found this out...

xrays (the actual film) is and will always the property of the vet that tok them. the information on them (weird as this sounds) is your property, so any reports regarding the xrays belong to you.

Yes, some vets are happy to print off copies of xrays for you, but my experience is that most will not, and legally do not have to.

A lot of vets also loathe to pass on xrays to other vets unless they are specialist versus local vet etc. If you were simply changing vets, they will possibly refuse.

I hope I have explained that clearly.

Hope Charlie is doing OK.

My understanding is that the vet hospital owns those documents and can refuse to hand them over directly the the client if they wish.

We will give clients xrays to take with them to a referral, but they must bring them back to us (we need to keep such things as part of our records).

I would think a specialist centre could give you a copy of the xrays on a CD for you to take and should be able to fax/send all history on to another vet for you.

In actual fact Willow, how it was explained to me is that the client has paid to have the xrays done and read, not paid for the films to be their property. If your vet pracrice does this, then that is really cool, but legally they do not have to.

Please note, I am all for clients having xrays, not the other way around, just in case it sounded that way

Interesting...

We're not changing specialist or vet... we just want to go out there for second opinions. they have no idea what's wrong with charlie, so we want to go somewhere else to see if someone else does. more people working on this, the better.

Goodluck some vets are using this as extra money for copies.

Our vets are great, they dont want to store piles of useless one off X rays & are more than happy for them to be used by another vet for a second opinion. If there so special that a vet wants it they can place on disc but i dont now too many vets that actually keep x rays ?? for the life time of that dog

many years ago we had this issue & they wanted to charge us for extra copies.

We said if we have to pay for extra copies why are we paying for the first ones??They never could answer that

So are you saying your not changing the place your using you just want another staff member to look at them ???

Out of interest when you had the X rays & the likes done did you have to sign any paperwork about who owns the x rays & what can be done with them or where you not informed at all??

What I want is to have easy access to Charlie's medicial papers and xray... I'm not leaving the specialist office, I just want second opinions and other people to look in Charlie's case. Is that the wrong thing to do?

Well, I know these guys are very interested in Charlie's case. They even suggest that I offered Charlie's body (when he dies) to them so they can do more research on him.

We never had to sign papers about xrays at all. This is all kind of new to me.

I believe vets are legally bound to keep all xrays they take on file for X amount of years. Cannot remember if it is for the life of the dog or an amount of years.

cw, if it is for a second opinion and in the same building, simply ask the receptionists to pass the xrays on to the specialist in question that you are seeking the 2nd opinion from.

No, there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for a 2nd opinion, it is an excellent idea. Hopefully they will co-operate and make it easy for you. There is no real reason why they shouldn't, but I have explained what the actual laws are regarding xrays and who owns them.

Charlie's story certainly is interesting, and I can understand why they want to learn more from it.

Nope & if the centre isnt co operating then that stinks, specialist centres are all about specialised people & one would think they work amongst there staff anyway.

Like already said, make your appointment & ask for the history to be passed on.

If they are interested & your still having issues then speak to them direct .

There should be no problem in having SASH fwd your history etc onto another clinic. It's when clients seek copies of things for themselves when you can run into problems, because the clinic owns the documents and does not need to pass them to the client. If you want to go and get a second opinion from elsewhere, why not just tell SASH and ask the info to be sent? Why do you need to access it specifically?

Because I don't exactly know how to deal with all this! :o

I was told that if I need a second opinion, then I need to get Charlie's medicial papers and xrays to bring to other specialists. I realise now how things work, it makes sense and less stressful!

Although, I do want copies of Charlie's xrays. Just so at home, I can study it myself. I'm weird, I like looking at xrays.

Then I must be weird too. So do I, CWW.

Besides - when you get to see them at the Vet's it is often only a glimpse due to time restraints, and usually your head is so full of trying to take everything in that it is easy to come away not remembering what you actually saw.

I would expect your Vets would most particularly want to hold onto Charlie's records, even if they were a clinic that would normally release them back to the clients. Charlie is an extraordinary case. I wish it wasn't so, though. I wish for Charlie a positive prognosis and an easy cure once it is known.
