Sticks1977
I have just started to put a collar on Henry as we have had him at home just over 1 week now. We will be heading to dog training on Saturday morning so I thought it would be a good idea to get him used to wearing his collar. He has a small rogz collar that has a small black clip or buckle to attach it around his neck. I had a play with him outside while I put it on him and had a small 5 minute walk in the backyard with his lead on and I think he is getting used to it (biting the end of the lead a little). My main concern is he is stratching with his back legs at the collar around his neck. Should he only wear the collar for short periods of time? or should I leave it on him so that he gets used to wearing it? Thanks to all in advance for any advice and will have some more pictures of Henry up in the photos thread shortly. Sandra777
Personally I would leave the collar on him, just make sure it's firmly buckled enough that he can't catch a toe under it. Keep an eye on him and if it is obviously distressing him remove it, but it's normal for them to scratch at the collar for a while and if you distract him and make it fun he'll soon get used to the new sensation. W Sibs
(i know i will get flamed for this ) Charlie doesn't wear the collar at home. He gets to run around the house "naked" Charlie has two collar.. one for training and another one for walking and doing outdoorsy thing. I started training the day I got him. Everyday for 3 sessions of 5 minutes, I will put on his training collar for him and we do basic sitting, dropping, stay etc. The collar never once been an issue with him. I put it on him, and he knows that something good is going to happen. He knows that he will get treats or he gets to go for a walk or he is going to go somewhere! Bluefairy
I never put a collar on a dog while they are in the house. But it is a good idea to get the pup used to it, either way of short times or all the time is OK, whatever works for him or you. I only ever put a collar on when going outside or for walks. Just in case they escape, you just never know, even with a microchip, its great if your dog has an id tag so if someone finds them they can just bring them back....instead of calling the pound. Cazwah
Chestnut scratched at his collar a lot at first. We would practise putting it on just for short amounts of time at first and building the time up. We tried putting it on and then playing with him to distract him, or practised some sits and downs etc. What really worked was that first day at puppy school- Collar? What collar? Increase the amount of distraction in the environment and you automatically decrease the attention he will pay to the collar and the lead! I'm sure he does associate the collar with puppy school or walks now, and I can practise loose leash walking around the house pretty well now (he's 13 weeks old). Good luck! No collars at home at all in my house either! Also started lead and collar training after the second day Bitty came home and have never had an issue with her and her collar. She lines up to have it put on because it means walkies or visits to peoples homes!
macka
Have the puppy collar on whenever you are home to supervise. (Or get a break-away collar which you can leave on all the time). Ignore any scratching/carrying on. He will get used to it in no time.
luffy4688
When I got Bailey, I put a collar on him straightaway. He pawed at it for a couple of hours, obviously not happy having a collar on him. Now it does not even bother him 1 bit. He sometimes does not wear his collar at home nowadays as well. :D
MsBex
When I first got Cory I left the collar on him all the time, and I've blessed that collar and tag on more than one occasion (a few successful escape attempts)! Now that he's more settled, I've started to take it off while he's at home, but only since I've had him microchipped!
Guest belgian.blue
(i know i will get flamed for this ;)) Charlie doesn't wear the collar at home. She only wears a collar when we leave the house. I'm too scared she will get caught when I'm home and all the hair, she'd never be able to get herself free. So nude dog here! Don't think I had a problem with Ivy wearing her martingale when she was a pup. Just make each experience postive and he soon won't know he's wearing it. PoppyDog
Poppy pawed at her colar when we first put it on her. We started a week ago and left it on for short bursts. Then my fiance was at home for two days and got her used to wearing it all day. Its a very light purple one...very similar to the one you described! Mine never wear collars at home............My dogs know it is training time, when the collar goes on. We have stopped wearing collars when one of our dogs got hung-up in our garden.....luckily we were home and were unable to release him, he would have choked to death. We just put the collars on when we go out, they get used to them
BigDaz
My two havent worn collars for 12 months, since I got home and found one had tightened the colloar on the other so much while playing I couldnt get any fingers in between. I have however just bought two breakaway collars for them, just getting them use to them now. I made this decision after finding a stray and cursing the fact he didnt have a phone number on his collar. I had the patience to walk around the neighbourhood with him for an hour before the ownsers eventually found us. Someone finding my dog may not do the same thing, they may have the decency to phone if there is a collar with a tag, if not they may just think, this is too hard, Ill just let the dog go and hope if finds its way home. Tilly
I put the collar on my GSD pup the moment I got him out of the crate off the airplane. I also put a very light lead (one of the kitten ones) and let him drag that around inside ... and occassionally putting a little tension on it. He got used to it being on a leash really quickly as he saw having a leash on as fun and playtime. I left his collar on him fulltime until recently (changing for growth of course) as my dogs don't wear collars at home ... and I found as he is constantly in and out of water and mud, the collar was starting to rub on his neck a bit. Esky the husky
Esky has been wearing her collar since the moment we got her. I don't want to risk her getting away and having someone keep her because shes a 'stray' I would say just let your pup try it out and make it very rewarding to wear a collar. Lots of treats. You shouldn't have a problem then
poodlefan
My dogs don't wear collars unsupervised either. A collar and tag won't stop a dog being stolen.. dead easy to get rid off. A microchip is a far safer method of ID.
Esky the husky
She's microchipped as well I mean speaking personally if I saw a lost dog with a collar I would call the number on the dogs tags Whereas if i found a dog without one I would have to take him somewhere to get scanned.. I dunno i guess I'm just overly paranoid. In the end I know that if someone really wants my dog they could just take her, end of story. But we all hope that will never happen
spoilt lab lives here
I reckon just put it on him tight enough so he cant get his nails or anything caught in it and leave him to get used to it.
